please tell me i'm not crazy and the only one having this problem

thanks for reassuring me that i wasn't crazy

yea...i saw haavard's comment earlier this morning. i guess they know about it, which is good. just curious if it is expected behavior, or if it's something that is going to be changed in the future.
It is actually a result of a bug fix in Opera. The bug (CORE-9793) was that font-size: small would increase font-size compared to default of some elements. To counter this, GMail (and other sites, like Amazon) set the font-size to x-small specifically for Opera. After the fix, Opera too applies x-small like instructed and you get tiny fonts. So it is Opera's fault for having the bug in the first place, but it has to be "fixed" by the sites. Our OtW-team has notified them.
crossing fingers that everything will be fine and dandy soon!
Gmail is now almost unusable. Tiny font by default, pressing "r" for reply does not put the cursor in the reply box. Google calendar seems better however.
Anyway, any work around to fix this default size of font? 40% of my internet usage is for gmail.

I found a better solution, go to the LABS tab of gmail settings and enable: Default Text Styling by Jonathan K, save and select normal font as the reply choice. Voila! problem solved.
genius!!! this solution should be a sticky!!!
1.Create a file containing this line:
.LW-avf {font-size: small !important;}
2. Save this file as gmail.user.css into the Opera folder (e.g.: Opera/styles/gmail.user.css)
3. Log in to your Gmail account. RIGHT click on any empty space and select "Edit Site Preferences".
Select the "Display" tab. Go to "My style sheet" textbox and browse for the gmail.user.css file.
Click OK and restart Opera.

Did this work for you? I was trying a similar, but user-js hack. No luck!

Tried this Google labs workaround with my google apps account using opera 12.00 alpha Build 1191 but it did not resolve the issue.
This problem isn't caused by a bug in Opera, but is caused by fixing a bug in Opera.
In earlier builds where the bug was present the bug was fixed by Google.
Now Google has to remove the fix so Opera can present normal font size.

here's why:

Just tried it myself, here are some (these are not steps, different solutions!):
1. Press "Plain text"
2. Press "tT" button and choose "Normal"
3. When opening gmail press "Load basic HTML"
4. Simply zoom in
5. Use Operas mail client: http://www.opera.com/mail (easy to use and setup)
These don't have to be permanent solutions but try them until the new build (Gmail)...
And just to notice, font is normal size to the one who received the mail.
Hope this helped, bye!
brixbrax's css solution is what I'm going with--works perfectly.
pablou's google labs solution worked, but leaves the quoted text in a reply small. You may have to search Labs for the DTS lab.
smartydix's list would work temporarily, but would get annoying for regular gmail users. I had been doing #2 since this started, and having to ctrl+a to highlight all text in a reply and then click tT/normal got very old for 50 emails/day.

Nice, but that destroys the possibility to use other font sizes in an e-mail, because everything will be forced to use the font-size: small rule, since that rule overrides any other style-rule that isn't using the !important directive.I have a fix:

.LW-avf {font-size: small !important;}

The user-js isn't working because the compose-window is actually an iframe where the surrounding frame doesn't have access to. Maybe if you check the URL of the iframe and then edit the preferences of that URL instead of the URL of the tab itself?
edit: I was wrong! It only destroys the possibility if you add a star after the body.class, if you just put it like he did, then it works fine.
Thank you very much indeed, fine sir!

it keeps me from yelling at my computer when using gmail!!
Fix for small text in Gmail replies using Opera 11.6
1.Create a file containing this line:
.LW-avf {font-size: small !important;}
2. Save this file as gmail.user.css into the Opera folder (e.g.: ~/Library/Opera/styles/user/gmail.user.css). If you are using TextEdit to create the text file, you will have to save as .txt and then edit the file name through the Finder (option-click the file name).
3. Log in to your Gmail account. RIGHT click on any empty space and select "Edit Site Preferences".
Select the "Display" tab. Go to "My style sheet" textbox and browse for the gmail.user.css file.
Click OK.
Note ~library is hidden by default in OS X 10.7 (Lion) to get this to show up in the file selection box, go to terminal and type; chflags nohidden ~/Library/ and press enter
Credits;
Code fix; brixbrax
User Library show up; Karthik.K
The tiny mail font really is becoming a deal breaker for me using opera, has been going on for months ): Select all and changing it doesn't stick if you click around to edit text.
I hate the idea of fiddling with code like stuff, or hacks to get normal mail behaviour. What effect will it have when I use a different browser on same or different computer, and complicates stuff if something does go wrong.
I can't see Google fixing things for a competing browser product in a hurry.

Than you should check if browser.js is up and running
http://www.opera.com/docs/browserjs/
As stated before this isn't a bug anymore in Opera, because Opera fixed it, and the bug is now on Google's side.
Opera has a fix for it in browser.js
