How could you ban yourself? 
Generally you go to the group's About page, there will be a button there saying either "Apply to join this group" (if the group is set up so that moderators have to approve new members) or "Join this group" (if membership is open to anyone) ... though some groups are "Invitation only" in which case you'd have to get one of the moderators to invite you.
