Opera Email - How to use it

I have downloaded & installed Opera on my Linux computer.
The I started a POP3 email account for my Gmail.
Then I started an IMAP account for my Gmail.
It is not working like I'd like it to work or function.
Then I started reading Opera email tutorials. It states that using POP3 and IMAP for same email account will cause problems.
Thanks a lot; I already experienced that!

So my questions.
How do I get it (Opera) to leave my emails on my Gmail account so they are accessible from/with other computers and/or sites?

I assume from reading tutorial that an IMAP account might do such. However how do I get rid of the POP3 access; it disappeared from the Opera window after starting IMAP account. I think it still exists because when I open Opera email every thing appears twice which I assume means once for POP3 and another for IMAP.

Any help appreciated. As it is now I avoid use of Opera until this behavior can be corrected.

Correct.

Menu -> Mail and chat accounts -> select the account and delete it. That will get rid of the POP account.

Note that when deleting POP accounts, it deletes all the messages stored on the computer. So, if you had "When messages are accessed" with POP set to "delete Gmail's copy" at mail.google.com or "leave messages on server" unchecked for the POP account in Opera, there may have been some of your messages that were removed off the server and only exist in Opera. This means that you'll lose those particular messages when deleting the POP account. If you didn't mess with those options, you should be ok. But, warning you just in case. Now, if there are some messages that only exist in Opera and you need to upload them back to the server, drag them from the you@example.com POP access point in the mail panel to the "Inbox" IMAP folder folder view under the you@example.com IMAP folder access point in the mail panel. That will reupload those particular messages.

Note that Gmai'ls IMAP server doesn't behave like a normal IMAP server (in any mail client). See this page and some of the links at <http://my.opera.com/operawiki/forums/forum.dml?id=58632> related to Gmail.

Instead of Gmail IMAP, you might want to test with a more normal IMAP server. You already have a mail account at mail.opera.com. Just setup an account to it. Use your @myopera.com email address in the wizard and Opera will get the right settings.

Also, see How M2 views work and how to use the account selector.

Mr. Burnout426,
Thank you for taking time to reply to my questions.
However now when I try to start Opera on my Linux box running Ubuntu version 10.04; the Opera program crashes; I tried several times and clicked the "send a report" box.
I appreciated the Opera email program because it allowed one to sort the email by date or other fields as well. Gmail doesn't seem to permit sorting and therefore makes if more difficult to find a specific message.
Since my Opera won't run I have lost approximately five thousand messages. So am abandoning the Opera program.

That was not Opera's fault. That is a setting in the GMail account.
In the GMail "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" settings page, the drop down box for handling POP retrieval must be showing "Delete GMail's copy."
You need to have set that to one of the OTHER THREE options in that dropdown.

Probably too late now, unless they are still sitting in the GMail Trash.

It's OK to blame Opera for what it does, but for *this, problem* you should blame yourself for not reading the Setup page in GMail.

Start Opera with a new profile like this:

opera -pd ~/operatest

to see if Opera still crashes. If not, it's something to do with the profile in ~/.opera. While Opera is closed, rename the mail folder in there and start Opera back up. If it doesn't crash, the problem is in the mail folder. If it still crases, the problem is somewhere else in the profile. You then might want to rename the .opera folder and startup Opera so it creates a new one. Then, you can import stuff, including mail.

Just because Opera crashes on startup doesn't mean that your messages aren't still there. Look under ~/.opera/mail/store/accountN (where N is the number for the account in accounts.ini). If the mbs files for your POP accounts are still in the store folder, you can import them into a new profile (see the previous link). For IMAP accounts, you just set them up in a new profile. The messages will still be on the server unless you don't Gmail to delete them from the server when accessing via POP.
