Opera Link (passwords) - which copy (local/server) takes precedence?
I wasn't able to find a useful topic using the search function - if I missed it then please excuse if I create yet another Opera Link thread even though my question is already answered somewhere else.I am using Opera on 3 machines - my computer at work, my computer at home and for a few weeks on my notebook. I have been using Opera Link to synchronize everything between my work/home computer for quite a while without any problems. Last night I decided to set up Opera Link on my notebook as well because I have been using it more and more often recently and thought that bookmarks and especially passwords would come in handy.
I set up Opera Link and everything started to synchronize. I had all my bookmarks on the notebook and the speed dial tab looked just like I was expecting it to look. Sadly, for some reasons the local passwords took precedence over the ones saved on the server - I lost all of my passwords except the very few I had on my notebook. Luckily I will be able to retrieve my wand.dat from my home PC so the password loss is just temporary.
The question now is: How do I prevent this from happening again? How does Opera (Link) decide which settings to use? When does it save the local settings to the server and when does it use the settings already on the server? Interestingly my speed dial settings were overwritten with the ones saved on the server but it was the exact opposite with my passwords. I am not able to find useful information in the forums or the documentation on how Opera Link is supposed to work exactly. Is Opera trying to merge the local data with the ones on the server?
I will try to reset everything tonight. I'll make a copy of my local settings on my home PC where everything is still intact. I will then disable Opera Link, enable it again and hope that my local settings will find their way onto the server. However, I am not sure if this is the correct way to do this.
To get to the point: Anyone know how to tell Opera which data to use when enabling Opera Link? Is there any useful documentation out there?
Just a quick update in case someone is having the same problem and finds this thread - I have all my passwords back after starting Opera on a machine with Opera Link already enabled a copy of the wand.dat file that still had all the passwords. I also have the password that replaced all my other passwords from the laptop so I guess Opera does try to merge the data. No idea why it didn't work the first time. It probably makes sense to make a copy of your Opera configuration before enabling Opera Link on a new machine just to be sure.
I have the same problem.
Although, when I try to load opera link on my other device with passwords, it downloads speed dial, bookmarks, history, everything BUT passwords, and there is red exclamation mark in the opera link "cloud" saying:

So, what is the problem? I've been trying to use this on multiple computers and it never worked. Should I create new opera account?

Hi
This happens because the username is Case Sensitive. It looks like the passwords are also encrypted/salted with your username. You can use any case to log in to Opera Link and it will not give you an error message for bookmarks etc. but you really need to spell the username exactly the way you did when registering otherwise the password synchronization does not work.
I also encountered this and was a bit confused at first. I am able to log in to Opera Link just fine using the username "dertolleemil" but then I remembered that I signed up using "DerTolleEmil"; As soon as I changed the username to exactly what it was when I created the account the password synchronization started to work just like all the others in Opera Link.
Opera Link will encrypt your passwords with your username and password. The thing is, if you change your password, your encrypted information cannot be decrypted anymore. Opera Link will continue to use your old password to make sure that the data can still be read.
It is all a bit confusing and sadly Opera gives almost no information when you set up Opera Link that you will need to remember your password because you will need it even after changing it (maybe it does give this information but I forgot
). Anyway, if Opera Link is working but Opera is unable to decrypt the information on the server you will see the screen above - since the case of your username is important as well you will get the same screen even if the password is correct but the username is not. Hopefully all you need to do is enter your username the exact way as you did when you set up Opera Link. If that still does not work then you changed the password at some point. In that case you can either try to guess your old password or create a new one - creating a new one will wipe all the data on the server though (password data, bookmarks etc. will not be affected as far as I know).
Hope that helps!
