Check the task manager to make sure the opera process isn't stuck running. If it is, kill it first.

Check the permissions of the mail folder and all its files to make sure none of them are set to read only.

operaprefs_default.ini is in the Opera program files directory. operaprefs.ini is in the opera preferences directory in your roaming profile folder. Can't say more about the location of them unless you reveal your OS and how you installed Opera.

I'd try renaming operaprefs.ini in the preferences directory first. I'd also delete autosave.win in the sessions folder in the preferences folder.

But, I'd download the installer and use the "standalone installation" option to install to a folder on your desktop. Then, I'd replace its mail folder with a *copy* of yours. If the standalone installation option gets the init error too, it's definitely a problem with your mail folder. If not, the problem is probably somewhere else. The mail folder is located in your local profile folder.

If you find out is the mail folder, you can check to see if accounts.ini or index.ini are corrupted (by looking at them in a text editor). If they look fine, it's probably something with the mail database. In that case, you'll have to do <http://my.opera.com/operawiki/forums/topic.dml?id=1162442>.

But, I'd also download the Opera installer and install it over your current install to repair any damages program files.

Did you recently upgrade Opera or your anti-virus? Recently have an improper shutdown of Opera or your computer?

By default, these should be the locations of things:

Opera program files directory: C:\Program Files\Opera

Roaming profile directory (also called the preferences directory or "Opera Directory"): C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Opera\Opera

Local profile directory (also called "Opera Local Directory"): C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Opera\Opera

The mail folder is in the local profile directory.

You can see most of these locations from opera:about if the browser part of Opera still starts up fine.

Note that by default though some directories like the both are hidden in windows explorer. In windows explorer, you need to goto tools -> folder options -> view and select the option to show hidden files and folders.

First, make a copy of your mail folder and put that copy somewhere safe. Then, you can do whatever you want.

As said earlier, you can rename operaprefs.ini while Opera is closed. When Opera starts back up, it'll create a new one. If that doesn't help, you can always revert to the old one. As for operaprefs_default.ini, just post the contents of it here inside code tags. I'll see if there's anything wrong with it.

But, you should do the standalone installation suggestion mentioned in my post above as that will tell you whether it's the mail folder or not.

In that link, you won't be able to backup your contacts or feed list because mail was not initialized correctly. You can skip backing up contacts though and just let the new mail folder use your existing contacts in contacts.adr.

But, once you close down Opera and rename the mail folder and start Opera back up, you should have no problem importing from the old mail folder to the new one. But, you have to do the "standalone installation" suggestion first to determine if it's even a problem with the mail folder.

That is fine as long as that ">" isn't there.

You don't uninstall anything.

When you load up the installer and click "options", you need to change the install path to a folder on your desktop. Then, in the drop-down, you can choose "standalone installation". That will install a totally separate Opera to the folder on your desktop. It will not interfere with your other Opera or other settings. In fact, this Opera's settings will be inside that folder on your desktop in a folder named "profile". While both Operas are closted, you need to replace the "mail" folder in it with a *copy* of your mail folder from your original Opera. Then, you start up opera.exe in the folder on your desktop if mail loads fine, then, the problem with your original Opera is not in the mail folder. If the opera has the problem too now, then it is a problem with your mail folder.
