How does opera master password work?

I'd like a clarification.

Is it when someone starts Opera, the master password has to be entered before anything can be surfed to? Like email addresses and places with logins?

Or is it just something that protects the passwords, so that people can't use reverse tools to steal them.

I've searched for a bit and couldn't find an answer.

Afaik the "master password" will be asked when fetching new mail and/or using the wand (password manager). It won't be needed for surfing or for viewing (already downloaded) email messages.
