Spam boomerang: mails marked as non-spam keep being re-marked as spam

I use IMAP (dovecot) and 10.60 (1184) on OS X and access the same mailbox with Apple Mail and sometimes Thunderbird.

After upgrade to 10.6 thousands of my old mails were marked as spam. I've marked them as non-spam, lowered strength of the filter to "Medium", but I still get tons of false positives, and these aren't just new mails — Opera keeps rediscovering 3-year old messages as spam!

Recently it took Opera less than 10 seconds to re-mark non-spam message as spam. I didn't even have time to switch away from Spam view before freshly marked e-mails were put back in there.

Is that a known problem?

Not sure myself.

I'd setup the IMAP account in a standalone installation of Opera to see if you can reproduce it there. If not, maybe you just need to reset the spam filter.

Or, maybe it has something to do with what keywords Apple Mail and or Thunderbird set for spam messages. Logging should reveal what's going on.

Opera has had issues with old versions of Dovecot that don't support uidplus. But, I think that's been fixed. Check the compatibility list in the log to see if the server supports it or not. If not, maybe it has something to do with that.

I have had the same problem at times. I have stopped using the send spam to trashcan button for fear of losing messages. So now my question is, can I make a filter that can mark a specified message and send it to trash as soon as it is received? If I can do this easily, I will be happy to make a hundred filters that will delete certain ones. I would rather not make a filter I have to click on and do other clicks. I really want one that simply moves to the trash so I don't have to manually do anything to it.

If I stop Opera Mail from downloading mail while it's in its crazy "everything to spam folder!!!" phase, then it won't try to move messages to the spam folder for a while.

If so, I guess that clicking the check/send drop-down and choosing "Resynchronize all messages" now and then might help. My IMAP servers don't support it so I haven't tested this at all to know what exactly it does and what side effects it might have with spam keyword handling.

For the log, I see Opera adding the "Junk" keyword to a bunch of messages. Then, I see Opera adding the "$Junk" keyword to a bunch of messages. Actually, it looks like the same set of messages. So, I guess that when Opera marks a message as spam, it adds both "Junk" and "$Junk".

I also see the removable of "$Notjunk" and the addition of "$Junk" on one message.

I see that Opera doesn't do anything with the "nonjunk" keyword (like remove it when marking a message as spam). I assume "nonjunk" is from another client and Opera just ignores that one.

I'll have to test to see what Opera does with my IMAP server and what keywords it uses. But, even then, don't know if I can help with that.

If you can set up a test account that reproduces the problem, the devs will probably look at it.

When I select "Resynchronize all messages" nothing happens. No indication in the UI, nothing in the logs.

Yeh, Opera seems to use just $Junk and $NotJunk for me.

I now think that Thunderbird uses Junk/NonJunk without the $. I also think I remember reading somewhere that Thunderbird looks for "Junk" and "NonJunk" as substrings of any keyword. So, if there's an abcJunkdef keyword on a message, Thunderbird will consider it spam and if there's "abcNotJunkdef" on a message, Thunderbird will consider it not spam. I hope Thunderbird doesn't see "Junk" in "$NotJunk" from Opera, consider it as spam and then add its own "Junk" keyword where Opera then sees "Junk" and adds its own "$Junk" keyword. Don't know.
