Upgrading from 10.63 to 11.60 - is it possible in one step?

Does any one know if it is possible to upgrade from old 10.62 to the current 11.60 in one step?

Obviously I'd backup everything first. But it would be nice to upgrade from 10.62 which I am still running to this new 11.60.

Underneath my opera install is a Mail folder that has been growing since the first version of M2 ever appeared (I have been running Opera since the last Century and v3.xx). I am hoping I can do a straight upgrade as I have tons of ancient email and MANY MANY MANY filters all setup in the old style and important to keep as they are. (including the "unread") flags.

I really don't have the option to reimport email. Also note it is all POP mailboxes (and 35 different email addresses)

I will soon test things out in Win7, but before that I am wondering if there is any advice out there for such a big leap. And should I step through any other 11.xx versions for a cleaner upgrade? (note I still have "filters" in 10.62 and not the new "labels" of 11.xx)

(My mail is very important to me... smile)

Sometimes Opera has to include upgrade code for mail to handle old installs. But, sometimes this upgrade code is removed after a few versions and upgrading can hose things. So, be careful.

For 10.63 to 11.60, I'm not sure personally. I'm pretty sure that if you do upgrade the mail folder you won't be able to downgrade it to 10.63 and you'll have to rely on your backup that you made before hand if you want to downgrade.

As for problems you might have, you might have issues when Opera upgrades index.ini. I don't remember what 10.63 has (seems like it's been forever) but if it has the old mail panel with filters and searches etc., all your saved searches will be deleted and your filters will/should be converted to labels.

Also, you will probably have some broken toolbars when you upgrade, so it'll be best to go to "ctrl + F12 -> advanced -> toolbars" and set the toolbar and menu to "Opera Standard" (same with the shortcuts on the shortcuts tab) and recustomize. You might also have to click the view button on the mail toolbar after that and choose "reset mail panel to defaults". Otherwise some buttons/access points might be missing.

If you're not using the "Opera Standard" skin, you'll most likely have to switch to it to get everything to look right.

Besides that, it should work at least. If anything else fails, it might be best to start with a fresh operaprefs.ini to fix things.

Also note that if you're upgrading a very old operaprefs.ini, it will contain specific paths to config files and mail folders. In new installs of Opera, these settings will be omitted from operaprefs.ini so that Opera uses the default locations and will only be present if you change them.

Also, click the "options" button in the install and make sure you have the path correct (where the button changes to "upgrade"). And, make sure the other settings are correct.

Sometimes, it's better to goto <http://www.opera.com/browser/download/?custom=yes>, download each version and upgrade to each. Sometimes that can be bad though if a version was known to be really buggy (like 10.5x which broke all kinds of things with attachments and such) that could survive through newer versions. I'd delete the cache, opcache, temporary_downloads folders just in case you've used 10.5x with your profile before.

You might want to do a database check before you upgrade just in case.

Also, if you have any drafts with attachments, there's a chance they might get lost.

But, with all that said, if you have everything backed up, you can just try it and if it doesn't work, you can revert to your old files.

Thanks for your help. Your advice makes sense and I'll clear some time time this weekend to walk through the upgrade.

I don't care about the lost searches, but do need to keep my filters. The good bit being nothing nasty has been flagged up in your suggestions. Though your warning the paths being reset in operaprefs.ini is a big flag to me which will stop a panic. smile

The main thing that put me off the idea of the stack of "historic" upgrades was the fact that I remember some did do damage to the database. Part of the reason I am now so far out of date was fear of the damage being done to M2.

I'll post back here with notes about how it went in case there are other people like me who have been scared of 11.xx smile

This is part of a migration to a new PC, so I may just abandon all my old customisations of Opera Browser and start fresh there, and manually import bookmarks, wand, etc after I get the all important mail folder settled into place (suddenly remembers mail passwords are stored in wand.dat so needs that on first test...)
