How to set default mailto option in 11.60?

Opera 11.60 does not have the option to set how to handle mailto links. Used to be in Opera preferences- Advanced- Programs. In there you could select web mail, Opera, or the mail program you were using on your computer already. There is no option in there on 11.60 now.

It's still there.

That is empty for me. Used to be a mail to option that you could edit. It's not there on a clean install either.

Is the programs section supposed to be empty now on a clean install and if so how do you add a web mail option for mailto?

Do you mean this?

If so you get that by clicking on Edit in the previous screenshot. Cant think of what else you could mean as it's one of those things I have never really paid attention to. I just go there and select my email program and that's it done.

Yes that is what I'm talking about. In 11.60 that is not there for me. The mailto is not there so I cannot click edit to get the dialog you posted a pic of. The whole programs section of Opera preferences is empty.

Are you using the default skin?

Yes, but it is happening on all skins I use. The browser looks and works fine other than the fact that there is no mailto protocol in the programs section. At first I thought something messed up during the update so I did a clean install and the mailto protocol was still missing.

Very strange. Sorry I can't think what else would cause this other than an incompatible skin.

I'm sure that the big changes in 11.60 to Opera Mail have something to do with it. Wonder how many other people have the issue and just haven't noticed or looked?

Hopefully someone else can come up with a solution for you.
Can you just clarify that your "clean install" means that you also deleted your profile folder.

Clean install means I used the standalone USB option in the Opera installer and installed to a new folder. I made no changes at all to Opera and checked the programs section of Opera preferences and there was no mailto option.

I also use Linux and upgraded to 11.60 and there was no issue with the mailto protocol there. I'm wondering if maybe the standalone USB option in Windows is the issue. You could try installing Opera using that option and see if you have the problem to. I prefer to use this option so I can set up Opera once then transfer the whole folder to other machines or USB drives. I use the portable version of almost all the software I have.

I just installed on my old XP system using the standalone USB and it used the profile directory that was already present on my computer.
The mailto option was still there though. So I deleted the profile and ran the USB installation again which created a new profile and still the mailto option was there.

How do you use a different web service other than the 3 provided? I want to set hotmail as my default.

Well I don't know what's going on then.

I had the same problem and while there is no way to bring the mailto back into the preferences from the menu (that I have been able to find anyway) if you go to Opera:config under mail the webmail service at the bottom can make the change number based on the ID number given the email compose string in:

C:\Program Files\Opera\defaults\webmailproviders

As a side note why Opera can't add more common compose strings is beyond me.

I have exactly the same problem, - to define mail protocol handling became just impossible, my version is 11.61.
Any support from Opera Software ?
Of course i understand, we do not pay directly for using it, thus Opera Software may take no care, but ..
If it will not be solved in short terms, it will be end of using Opera browser in our organization

I'm having the same issue. I would like to use Gmail as my default for mailto: links but I have no way of setting this. Has anyone come up with a solution?

Solved, either it was clean installation (not upgrade), or may be new Opera version was more smart to get rid off the bug
