New bug in 11.60: Search in text areas is now useless. And some older bugs are not fixed.

After installing the new version 11.60, I was editing a Wikipedia article. I did a search for a word with Ctrl+F and a result was highlighted in the text area, but when I clicked over the word with the mouse to change the focus to that word inside text area, the cursor oddly moved to the beginning of the text area instead of geting placed in the position where I clicked with the mouse, like it used to happen in previous versions.

I have tried with another text areas outside Wikipedia and the bug also happens, so I guess it is a general problem with text areas. As it is obvious to understand, this renders the search function in text areas useless: if I miss the position where a result appears, what is the point of making a search?

Apart from this, there are another two bugs I reported which are still happening:
http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=273107 (I posted it two years and half ago, but I admit it is not too serious)
http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=1051742 (However, I found this one more important than the previous one)

Could someone check if this happens on his installation?
Thank you in advance.

Well, I don't know about beta versions because I only use final ones, but I can assure that the last stable version (11.52) didn't suffer this issue.
By the way I tested it in Windows XP and Linux (Ubuntu 11.10) and the problem appears in both ones.
It's a blatant bug if, for example, you edit Wikipedia.

Thank you for your feedback.

I'm experiencing this bug as well. It really annoys me, as I do a lot of Wikipedia editing. In the previous versions it worked normally.

This is DSK-352370 (could turn into a CORE bug).

That's exactly how I feel! And, in addition, there is the aforementioned inability of Opera to use correctly the search and replace function in Wikipedia editing interface.
But despite of everything, Opera keeps on being my favourite browser, that's why I don't mind spending my time on reporting errors. I just hope these bugs I get fixed.wink

I have noticed this behaviour when searching text areas.

Although I didn't realize it was a regression in the latest version. I guess I don't search text areas all that often.

Can confirm that I'm also experiencing this issue in 11.60 with any site that uses a wiki or other text field.

Also confirm that this was not an issue in 11.52.

using Opera 11.6 on Mac 10.6.8

this incredibly annoying problem is still there in 'friday 13th' snapshot of 11.61 (http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/2012/01/13/jason)

is there any hope for it to be considered a blocker for 11.61 ?

Still there? What a pity! With all due respect, Opera 11.60 has been the worst version of Opera since i use this browser in terms of instability and bugs. In fact, I have to use a portable version of version 11.52 to perform certain tasks like Wikipedia editing. Furthermore, I 'm getting frequent crashes with 11.60 when I open new tabs, being the 11.52 version far more stable. With the release of Opera 11.61, I had expectations of these bugs and crashes getting fixed, but now I'm reading this... sad

No chance at all — its a minor bug, not even major or critical, and it certainly doesn't stop Opera from running. Nevertheless, even trivial bugs do get fixed.

Read the FAQ

No doubt all bugs are assigned a priority in Opera's bug tracking system, and fixed whenever time permits. Here are definitions of bug priorities from JIRA — a professional bug tracking system.
  • Blocker — Blocks development and/or testing work, production could not run
  • Critical — Crashes, loss of data, severe memory leak
  • Major — Major loss of function
  • Minor — Minor loss of function or other problem where there is an easy work-around
  • Trivial — Cosmetic problem like mispelt words or misaligned text.

Yes it was not there bevore 11.60 and it stays in 11.61. How many updates the bug can stay. Because for me it is a major loss in function, i consider to change: Every time copy & paste in another editor, find, edit, copy & paste back -> Preview and the extern editor open. If there is another thing -> find, edit, copy & paste back in Opera.

There is also the problem that the search results in formular fields are normal dark gray in light gray.

I created a user JS that restores the textarea scrollbar position after the mouse is clicked in the textarea.

For now, it is a workaround for the Opera 11.6x scrollbar reset bug that occurs when the find bar loses focus.

Restore textarea Scrollbar Position:
https://gist.github.com/1710867/

I have the includes preset to Wikipedia. You can add others if you want.

Installing user JS:
  1. Create a folder for storing user JS files.
  2. Go to the user JS on GitHub > Right click on "raw" > Save Linked Content As... > Save the JS file to your user JS folder.
  3. Opera > Settings > Preferences... > Advanced > Content > JavaScript Options... > Under "User JavaScript folder", select "Choose..." > Select the folder > OK > OK > OK.

A good sign:

CORE-43285 Clicking to set cursor position after searching a textarea fails, and scrolls to the top instead

Fixed in Opera 11.62 Build 1297:

Fixed in the latest Opera 11.62 Snapshot

Please read the red text before installing any snapshot builds. I use the USB install option and install test builds to a new folder leaving Opera 11.61 untouched.
