importing email

Just installed ver. 11.52 & have imported Bookmarks from old version.

But have a problem with emails, could anyone point me to the correct method for importing emails from an older version to 11.52 ?

These instructions, from the 'Opera Mail Tutorial' (link below) do NOT seem to apply,

If there's nothing wrong with your old mail folder, use it to replace the existing mail folder. No need to import or anything.

See <http://my.opera.com/operawiki/forums/topic.dml?id=1132992> and <http://my.opera.com/operawiki/forums/topic.dml?id=1132442> to get an idea of where mail stuff is stored at.

But, if you do want to import, you goto "Menu -> settings -> import and export -> import mail -> import from Opera" and point Opera to the accounts.ini in the old mail folder.

Importing doesn't import passwords or contacts. You'll have to type your mail passwords back in. For contacts, if you have your old contacts.adr, you can use the "import Opera contacts" option from the import menu.

Make sure that you import from a *copy* of your old mail folder, just in case something weird happens.

But, basically, you'll see from those links that you don't need to import anything really. You just make sure files and folders are in the right place.

Thanks for responding Burnout.

The 'old version' is Opera ver. 9.27.

Email in 9.27 used 'filters' AND 11.52 uses 'labels', I got the impression that the email would have to be imported so that the existing 'filter' structure could be translated to a 'label' structure.

If the 'mail' folder is moved to where 11.52 expects it to be, what will happen to my 'filter'/'label' structure ???

But, if you do want to import, you goto "Menu -> settings -> import and export -> import mail -> import from Opera" and point Opera to the accounts.ini in the old mail folder.

I did the above, previously, but it only imported the account information, NO EMAILS.

The only way I've found to import email is by importing a '.mbs' file (which has been exported previously), but that doesn't rebuild the 'filter'/'label' structure either.

Wow, that's old. Not even sure if you can upgrade 9.27 mail directly to 11.52/11.60. You might have to upgrade it in steps. See <http://www.opera.com/browser/download/?custom=yes> and <http://arc.opera.com/pub/opera/> for older builds.

If the conversion happens, it should happen either way you do it. An "import from Opera" does mostly copying anyway.

For example, the database has to be upgraded, index.ini has to be upgraded, saved searches will be deleted and filters will (or should) be converted to labels.

It should import messages too unless you tell it not to. But, it's possible there's something wrong with the old mail folder.

That would probably be best anyway to rule out upgrade issues. Note though that you can import the mbs files right from the store folder in the mail folder. There's some info about it at <http://my.opera.com/operawiki/forums/topic.dml?id=1162442>.

but that doesn't rebuild the 'filter'/'label' structure either.

Correct.

Hi, I have a question about importing emails.
I am using Opera 11.60 on WinXP SP3.
I have two computers with two instances of Opera with Opera Mail.
If I send an email from one computer (desktop), the sent email is stored there in Sent folder. The same for the other computer (laptop).
But if I want to search through the sent emails for something important, I have a problem, If I have only my laptop with me and the email was sent a year ago from my desktop far away.
This problem doesn't affect received emails, because I chcecked "Leave the copy on a server".
I would like to find a solution, how to import missing emails from one account to another existing email account, and also avoid duplicates.
Thank you for your replies.

POP is the wrong type of account to use if you want things to sync across multiple clients.

The solution is to use IMAP and set an IMAP sent folder on both computers. You already have an account at mail.opera.com with IMAP access. Just type your myopera.com email address (your username at myopera.com) in the new mail account setup wizard. Once you're done, goto "menu -> mail and chat accounts -> the account -> edit -> imap" and set a spam folder too *if* you want.

For sent messages specifically:

Right-click on "All Messages/Sent", choose "Export' and save as sent.mbs.

Then, in the other Opera, goto "Menu -> settings -> import and export -> import mail -> import generic mbox". Add the sent.mbs file, select the account you want to import into and set sent.mbs in the "move to sent" drop-down.

Importing other messages is the same. You just don't import them as sent.

and also avoid duplicates.

There's no automatic way to avoid duplicates. You'd have to delete the duplicates manually. But, you can uncheck "show duplicates" for "All Messages/Sent" for example to hide the duplicates.

Thank you, I'll try that.
