How to remove Opera 10.60 address bar drop down Google auto-complete annoyancy?

Hi ya.

I tend to browse to specific sites using the address bar, ie. type couple of letters press down and enter.

However, now that I upgraded to Opera 10.60 it offers some retarded Google search auto-complete as first option.

Is there any way to change the behaviour back to what it was?

In other words, I need some way to remove the search options from the main address bar (preferably with the old "search only by just pressing enter" behaviour) as there already are the search bar lying next to the address bar and the search 'hot-keys' for easy Google/whatnot access.

Now I have to either spend 5-6 button presses more or go through Google, which includes mouse waving.

..except that doing this removes autocomplete EVEN if I add a search mnemonic.

Eg. w reyn should popup Wikipedia: Reynolds Number...but it doesn't. sad

So, actually I'm asking for a way to change the priority of searches lower, so they wouldn't be first on the list.

I think you mean Opera 11.60, and I'm wondering about the exact same thing.

Usually I just type in the first letters of a bookmark to get to it, but now it's somewhere down at the bottom, beneath google suggestions and entries from the browser history. You pretty much have to search for it among the offered auto-completions, which defeats the entire purpose. Being able to change the default priorities would indeed solve the problem.

You could change the default search engine. I'm not a fan of leaking all the typed urls to Google, so I switched to DeckDeckGo, which doesn't have the search suggestions on the address bar.

"g something something" will still give the search suggestions.

You don't have to change the default search engine. Just remove 2 lines from your (customized) search.ini:
[Search Engine 1]
UNIQUEID=7A8CADE6677811DDBA4B5E9D55D89593
Name=
URL=http://www.google.com/search?q=%s&sourceid=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&channel=suggest
ICON=http://redir.opera.com/favicons/google/favicon.ico
Suggest Protocol=JSON                                                                             <== remove
Suggest URL=http://clients1.google.com/complete/search?q={SearchTerm}&client={Client}&hl=en       <== remove
Query=
Key=g
.
.

Though not really necessary, I also changed the search parameters ( Ctrl+F12 > Search ) from
http://www.google.com/search?q=%s&sourceid=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&channel=suggest

to the pre 11.60 parameters:
http://www.google.com/search?q=%s&sourceid=opera&num=%i&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

Find the search.ini file in your profiles directory (or wherever Opera stores your personal settings) and use a text editor, or - if there is not yet a search.ini in your profiles folder - copy the default search.ini (in your opera directory) to your profiles directory and edit.

My search.ini file is not like yours. It only contains this:

Opera Preferences version 2.1
; Do not edit this file while Opera is running
; This file is stored in UTF-8 encoding

[Version]
File Version=37

[Options]
Speed Dial Search=46209A.....[long number]

Opera 12.16

Odd, under Settings > Preferences > Search (tab), what does it list there? Could you try to add a custom search engine to see if the file reflect any changes?

I added the Kvasir search engine, now the search.ini files contains this:

Opera Preferences version 2.1
; Do not edit this file while Opera is running
; This file is stored in UTF-8 encoding

[Version]
File Version=37

[Options]
Speed Dial Search=4620[..long number]

[Search Engine 1]
UNIQUEID=9F9[..long number]
Name=Kvasir
Verbtext=0
URL=http://www.kvasir.no/
Query=
Key=k
Is post=0
UseTLD=0
Has endseparator=0
Encoding=iso-8859-15
Search Type=0
Position=-1
Nameid=0
Deleted=0

confused

EDIT: I deleted the new Kvasir engine and now the search.ini file is like the one I posted in the earlier post.

Oh, you probably never added or edited the any search engine before, right? So it's being pulled direct from the \locale\XX\search.ini inside the Opera application folder, instead of your profile.

My search.ini is pretty populated, but looking closer now, they all got this "Deleted=1" parameter. What an odd way to exclude them from the Search engine list :\

EDIT: Anyway, just copy the entries you want to edit from the other search.ini, as mochikun said earlier.

That's right, I have not edited it.

I think you mean C:\Program files\Opera\locale, I have many search.ini files there. But which one of them should I edit? I can't edit all of them? You see, inside the locale folder, there are a huge number of sub folders and most of the sub folders contains a search.ini file.

Tip: If you change the search key for the default Google entry, the complete Google entry will be added to the search.ini in the profile folder. It's not a good idea to edit the search.ini files in the Opera installation folder directly, these will be overwritten on each upgrade.

None of them! These are language specific files. And they are all default files, so leave them untouched.
Go to Tools > Preferences >Search, find the search engine Google (the one with the keyword g) and then Edit > Details. Delete "&channel=suggest" from the end of the address and save. Now you should have a customized search.ini in your profiles folder (you can find exact location here)

God bless you dude, this was annoying me for quite some time. 50% of the times I wanted to choose a url from the drop down menu, the google suggestions suddenly showed up and changed the place of that url and I usually ended up clicking one of the google suggestions instead of the url.

Go to Opera ---> settings ---> preferences ---> advanced ---> History and then you can change how many addresses you want it to save or delete its history
