11.6 mail search not working

Im using Windows XP, I deleted the lexicon directory and had the same problem.

It seems that when I am showing my unread messages, and I click in the search box above the headers list, that each time I type it reselects a message header (and different one each time I type) instead of searching, like there is a mouse focus problem.
The messages are not filtered based on the search term, just a different one is selected in the header list.

Anyone else has seen this?

I used the Opera Standard Skin,

Hmm, I switched to the new Clean Skin, and I can see that it does do the search now, but then it redisplays all
of the messages very quickly so you cant see the list. So then I do a backpage, and then the list appears!

That's weird.

The search field is "find as you type", so it should change as you're typing. But, it should also return correct results. Just make sure that when the search bar pops down, you keep it set to only search for that view instead of "all messages", unless you really do want the latter.

However, you should right-click on all your mail toolbars, goto customize and reset the toolbars to defaults just to make sure you're not using an old button from an old version of Opera. Or, you can just goto "ctrl + F12 -> advanced -> toolbars (and shortcuts)" and make sure you're using "Opera Standard" for everything. Then, recustomize.

Also, in "shift + F12 -> buttons -> mail view", you can drag the quick find field to the toolbar and right-click and remove the "search mail" field. The quick find field is simpler and just does a find on a view with no option to save the search etc. The "start search" field usually goes on the mail panel toolbar if you want a search field there.

Also, click the wrench icon and try changing "group by date" to "do not group" to see if that helps.

Finally, download the Opera install and use the "standalone installation" option to install to a folder on your desktop. Set up mail in it (do not import anything and do not uncheck "leave messages on the server") and see if it works better. If it does, something is probably messed up with your normal install.

Burnout426, many thanks for these instructions. I'm happy with the traditional search entry without "find as you type". This new approach works too slow in a big mail database. I'm still missing the context menu entry in each of the possible filtered views (labels, account. etc.). How to re-establish that? For your info: I jumped from 10.11 to 11.60. Another feature of the old version I appreciated: the automatic creation of search "results" as a new view in the mail panel. I used to have left some search views that I "visit" regularly (as a sort of quickly created filter, now called label).

That was removed a while ago, yes. Now you must use the "search mail" field. When the results are shown, you can choose to save the results a label. (A saved search/filter before was just a label with a different name anyway). It's no longer automatic on purpose. Users found that way too annoying.

Could you describe in more detail what you're referring to?

Your first answer: not a problem, when it is removed - although I liked it.

Regarding what you're asking me: Well, with former version, I could right-click on e.g. "sent mail" (global, or for an individual account), or right click on an own label view, and the context menu showd a search entry. Here the same search as is present via a global entry field (the one that does not find as you type) was allowed to do. Which limited the search within the scope of sent mail, the label clicked, etc. Moreover, a dialog was shown where you could further narrow your search: from/to field, message text, etc.

I see. Yeh, that was removed. "Menu -> Mail -> search" was removed to. Some (not a lot) users have asked for it back in some form.

The "Label as" and update filter/rule option was removed a while ago too. Some (not a lot) users have asked for that back too.

Hm, search in a limited area is too comfortable to do it without it. I'll try a version 11.11. Never change a running system...
Update: Version 10.63 has al the features I'm used to. And is still a substantial improvement over 10.11.

Yeh, when you right-click on the selection in the search mail field, the selection is cleared. Use ctrl + c for now to copy.

I don't see that behavior.

This is something that's puzzling me.. It was the default option ("all messages") and at first I thought that search didn't work. Then I found that choosing the current folder made things go fine but I still don't understand if the All Messages option just and plain doesn't work (bug?) or I have to set something better.

Could you help me?

Thank you

Hmm, don't know. It all works fine to me. You could rebuild the search index to see if that helps with "All Messages" in the search drop-down is selected. Note though that if you click "All Messages" in the search drop-down, you'll have to close out of the search (x) and retype the search for it to work right.

Unfortunately it doesn't work. The exact behavior is the one described by elchelman "... it redisplays all
of the messages very quickly so you cant see the list. So then I do a backpage, and then the list appears!"
Dont know why though

I should have read better your first answer to the problem. I solved it removing a search form I had above the left panel (acconuts et al.). It may be a legacy from a previous layout or a mod by myself but that's it anyway, now it works. Thank you for the help
