email client interface

Let's see if this is the right forum and a recognizable title. And to respond to some comments made before the post was locked.

I didn't know about a restore to previous version, which apparently is available only before the upgrade. The message I got when I tried to re-install Version 11.52 after upgrading to 11.60 was that the file structures were incompatible. Yes, some minimal changes to the mail display are allowed, but not the one with the list of unread emails *above* the content of a selected message rather than to the side. There were a couple more comments--I can no longer access them--that did not provide a solution. One mentioned the binoculars for changing the view; I remember the icon but can no longer find it.

original post:

The e-mail view in vertical columns is one thing about 11.60 that is extremely disappointing. Instead of having the full width of the viewing area divided in half with a list of e-mail headers at the top and the content of a selected e-mail in the bottom half, there is now a vertical column with minimal information from the headers encroaching on the space for the actual message. The result is a cluttered presentation that adds nothing worthwhile. There seems to be little about the layout that can be altered by the user. Nothing in Opera:config seemed to allow reverting to the previous e-mail display.

Naively I had configured Opera to update automatically, which it did with no warning that the file structure would be changed--again--allowing no possibility of going back to the highly satisfactory 11.52. From my viewpoint there is a definite downside to the change and no offsetting upside --there is nothing of value to me in the new version.

I have been an Opera user from early on. Sadly, with each revision the once user-friendly Opera is becoming more and more user-vicious.

Okay, there is a solution, albeit a bit obsure, at least to me.

Thanks to Rijk: "Use the 'Default Mail Settings' button (the one with the wrench icon [and] you use the default skin)." The Mail toolbar then shows a vertical wrench titled "Settings for this View," with sorting choices, AND a diagonal wrench titled "Default Mail Settings," with three layout choices and more sorting choices. The list above content layout is one of the three choices.
