Problems with visited links cache

There's a major problem with visited links since Version 10.5X or so. It depends on the cache size how long visited links are valid:

HDD cache off = Visited links getting lost after browser restart.
HDD cache 50 mb = Visited links getting lost after several hours across browser sessions.
HDD cache 400 mb = Visited links getting lost after a couple of days across browser sessions.

To get a practical visited links state timeframe, I would have to set the cache size on 1.000 mb or more. That's ridiculous. So there's definitely something broken with the whole visited links thing, even with an activated hdd cache and unchecked "empty on exit". And I'm not alone with the problem. Please refer to the following threads:

History of visited links
Visited Links
Link expiry longer than 99 hours
Links don't stay purple

Before V10.5X, the visited links state wasn't affected by the hdd cache and "empty on exit".

Are you affected by the visited links problem?

"Yes, it's annoying."

It's more than just annoying; it's the reason I have to use Chrome for sites on which I need to see what I've already clicked.
So I haven't stopped caring ... yet. But I hope Opera can fix this issue soon, because it's been a problem for way too long now.

Good idea to start a poll, exzentrik!

Yep, it's what I call a killer feature for any first choice browser ... it's a must have these days.

It obviously make no sense to base visited link coloring on the browser cache, this has to be based on browser history only, so SSD users can turn cache off entirely and keep files only in memory.

It's nice opera is gaining interesting new features, but dropping the important ones can't be a result of that!

Exactly! I love Opera for the speed and some features where I'd have to install add-ons in other browsers for, but due to this one problem, I've stopped using Opera and went back to Firefox. It's been a problem for so long that I'm scratching my head wondering why it hasn't been fixed. It's a pretty darn important issue.

I've reported this specific problem scenario. The bug number is DSK-356500.

This is the only reason why I'm still running Opera 10.53. When 10.53 doesn't cut it anymore, then I have to defect to Chrome.

With recent 12.00 beta builds the problem seems kind of fixed. At least with activated hdd cache @ 50 mb and unchecked "Empty on exit". My visited links are remembered for three days now, which is already a huge improvement compared to the couple of hours in Opera 11. I will keep track of it in the next days and hope, that the visited links will stay.

Not a perfect solution, though. Would be better if visited links work across browser sessions even with deactivated hdd cache (as in Firefox and Opera before V10.5X).

EDIT: Spoke too soon. Now all of my visited links disappeared, again. You can reproduce it with the news headlines on this site. Click some headlines there and look after three days, whether the headlines are still marked as visited or not.

This is a very ugly problem indeed. On some web pages with long non-chronological lists of links, it's a near disaster if on the next visit you're suddenly left without any indication of which ones you've already clicked last time, and which ones you still need to look at: it then takes a lot of time to check them all out, link-by-link, to see if you've already read them...
This happens to me all the time with Opera now, and apparently the Opera people don't see the urgency of repairing this basic feature. I already complained about it before, and frankly I'm getting fed up with this. For some sites I now need to switch to another browser. I still hold on to Opera because of my customized context menus, but if they keep neglecting to repair this bug, I'll have no choice but to give up on Opera.

Still no noteworthy improvement of the visited links state in 12.01. With hdd cache @ 50 megs, they are getting completely lost after roughly three days, as usual.

Back to Firefox then, where visited links working for weeks (even without (!) an activated hdd cache). I'll give Opera another try when 12.50 is final. sad
