Unless a drive-by exploit were to connect with some unpatched vulnerability in Opera itself, you should be in very good shape with scripts and plug-ins disabled... and Opera's developers are very good at knocking down vulnerabilities quickly. This is how I normally do my general browsing with Opera, using site preferences to relax settings slightly on a very selective basis for certain sites I've come to trust. It also helps to keep ads blocked as much as possible (I use an MVPS hosts file to block communications with most ad servers) along with blocking unwanted pop-ups within Opera... anything to reduce exposure to rotating ads and such that are only semi-policed/vetted by many sites. Also, keep Opera's Fraud and Malware Protection (or equivalent) enabled. And do realize that keeping JavaScript globally disabled will cause heartburn for Opera (or any other browser) with many sites, especially those using Flash and such... but the impact to you will depend on just what sites you normally visit. For the trusted ones, there's always Site Preferences to selectively enable it.
One final thought is to make sure you do your browsing from within a locked-down, limited user account if you're using Windows. That way, most kinds of damage will still be very limited should something ever manage to get past Opera.

Opera 12.14u (1738), 11.52 (1100) & 10.63 (3576) running on various Windows systems from Win7-64 down through KernelEx4-modified Win98FE (proof that reports of Win98's demise are greatly exaggerated).
the site preferences feature is great, but is there no way to change the default of identifying as Opera, so that for new sites it may identify as IE, and then use site preferences to make the exeptions? I can only seem to find that setting under site preferences, not under general preferences...
