If Kaspersky actually exchanges virus db with their competitors for the sake of the end-users, that's wonderful, but what i think might be happening is that they exchange only old virus db.

hey i agree with u ive been using kaspersky 4 a while now its simple and it doesnt put a heavy load on ur system simple to use maybe not a wonderful looking thin but the best still way to go kaspersky.

For years, I had to use Norton AV because my clients wouldn't let me connect to their networks without it. But due to a job change, I was able to switch to NOD32 last month.

The difference I see is mainly that applications load much faster, usually more than twice as fast, and startup time for my laptop is almost twice as fast.

Also, I haven't been using it long enough to be sure, but so far I haven't seen any of the difficulties that Norton AV often caused with software installation.

Just for information F-Prot has today launched its new v6 AV for Windows - see http://www.f-prot.com/products/home_use/win/

This is a totally new product and very different from its earlier v3. First impressions look very good (I am a longtime F-Prot user).

NOD32 is simply the most effective Anti-Virus client available. Although not free.

Thumbs up!

For the person who mentioned using BitDefender and Nod32 at the same time, do you have to tweak any setting so they don't conflict with each other or do they work together as installed?

For liability reasons, we can't allow posting links to serial number sights, no.

I will observe that fearwet2000's previous post is correct - a router can't protect you from viruses or malware, it can only protect you from worms and hackers. If you download something yourself, it can still spy on you or infect your system.

And of course, you don't know if the router itself has a flaw that could be exploited to access your system. Less common than downloading something you shouldn't have, but possible.

I was recently impressed with the speed at which Kaspersky Labs will disect and analyse a new virus. I sent them a sample of a new trojan on Thursday night, and they replied to me in a few hours with a report on their findings.

I guess the award that Kaspersky won in 2006 for best trojan detection was well deserved. wink

I still perfer avast! to Kaspersky, as avast! was one of 4 anti-virus softwares that detected the trojan when I first discovered it. The rest of the 20 or so anti-virus softwares I tested with didn't. That includes NOD32, which was the first company I sent the trojan to, and still hasn't included virus definitions for it yet. Even Symantec beat them to it. Although, to be fair, ClamAV and McAfee haven't added definitions for it yet either...

I just downloaded the 30d free trial of NOD32 at the recommendation of a friend.
I'm confused now, and wonder if one of you kind NOD32 users can help me out.
In the interface of the EMON (email monitor, i guess) it only lists Outlook.
To a novice like myself, that sounds like NOD 32 only scans incoming/outgoing Email via
the Outlook client, which I do not use. Should I worry, or does Opera do an adequate job
of scanning incoming/outgoing itself??

Wha???

Thanks
Austin

I use NOD32 for at least 5 years. This program didn't dissappoint me. KAV & Dr.Web which I used earlier are "heavy" for processor & eat a lot of PC memory.

NOD32 is an amazing anti-virus program, it picked up a virus that AVG and PC-Cillin missed, as well as constnantly being at the top in the PCWorld anti-virus comparisons does the best in the anti-virus tests and the best part about it is that it doesnt slow down the PC anywhere near as much as AVG or Kaspersky(which is probably the only other one better than NOD32).

Can you do without an ativirus (on WinXP) if you don't use a mail client at all and only use web mail server that routinely scan all messages, such as gmail?

This may be a little off-topic but since someone mentioned not using an antivirus.

As long as your computer is connected to the Internet, or a network of any kind, then you need an anti-virus software. To believe otherwise is folly.

Fortunately there are two very good anti-virus software companies that give away their home use versions for free. My favorite is called avast! and the other is called AntiVir. There are others that are free (such as AVG) but they are nowhere near as good.

BTW: If you have (or have had) Norton anti-virus, and you decide to switch to something else, then I recommend using this tool from Symantec to make sure that Norton has been properly eradicated. If it has not been fully removed, then you won't see as much of a performance increase. wink

Also, make sure to have a good anti-spyware utility, such as the excellent (and also quite free) Spybot Search & Destroy. It's simple to use, and is one of the best tools out there. The advanced mode even has tools which will allow you to modify what applications start when your computer starts up, allowing you more control over your computer's performance (admitedly most anti-spyware utilities seem to have such tools these days).

A good set of software. I'm not too keen on Ad-Aware due to a higher yield of false-positives, but it still does it's job. That SpywareBlaster is always a good thing to keep around as well (if you use Internet Explorer at all).

BTW: Spybot Search & Destroy 1.5 is on it's third beta test, with redesigned immunize function that works with Opera and Firefox to block malicious websites and cookies, and an updated TeaTimer (the real-time protection) which works better. I'm hoping they can get us a final build in the next month or two. wink

No, actually if the real-time protection from more than once anti-virus is running at once, then you will be less protected than if you were only running one.

Only use one anti-virus software at a time. Only use one anti-spyware at a time. They conflict with each other, and screw everything up.

Not a bad security setup. Do you also have Spybot Search & Destroy installed? It's immunize features are priceless.

Actually the biggest reason to keep Spybot installed is because it's immunization features help keep you from getting infected. Obviously it isn't perfect, but I don't know of any other anti-spyware utility that does that good at setting up block rules on your computer without having some extra component running all of the time (which means it won't interfere with the real-time components of other anti-spyware utilities).

Have been most pleased with Avast because of its features can be finely tuned. The only thing, is...the daily updates must have complete access. Not a good thing if the updates become corrupted. If that happens, the whole program will need to be uninstalled...which is also not a good thing, because sometimes Avast does not uninstall well, even with the special uninstall tool that is available. But, have found these things out the hard way, I still like Avast best.

Not true at all. I get to clean up a lot of computers that were protected by things like McAfee, Norton, TrendMicro, AVG, etc...

There are three good anti-vir softwares: AntiVir (free version available for home use), NOD32, and Kaspersky.
