Opera works OK with JRE 6.30. It is JRE 6.31 that causes the problem so I blame Oracle which suffers from typical corporate deafness.

Also, try with this build and this build to see if it crashes there too. You can use a standalone installation so they don't interfere with your normal Opera.

Opera 11.61 works fine here with Java 7 Update 3 on Windows XP SP3.
Windows 7 SP1 x86 edition and Windows XP Service Pack 3.
If you need any help from me with regards to Opera, please make a comment on any of my blog posts.

Problem solved

Uninstall old JRE version and then install new version. Simply updating does not ensure that new version works properly.

Opera now works fine with JRE 6.31 and the lovely Java applet from www.thewoodheadsite.org.uk can once again be enjoyed in Opera.

Same problem here, uninstalled, ran JavaRa to remove all old java files and reinstalled 6.31 twice. Internet Explorer works OK, Opera crashes on Java instantly.
chessgames.com, and the java.com test page are examples of instant crashes.
Unfortunately cannot get previous version without an oracle.com account, so just disabling java in Opera for now.

Furthur to my last comment, and confirming blckninja2213's and others' findings I have located and installed Java 7u3 and this solves the problem. 6.31 would definitely not work for me in Opera although it was OK in IE.
Java 7u3 located here: http://www.filecluster.com/downloads/Sun-Java-JRE.html
Use filecluster mirror - External mirror 1 leads you to Java site which requires Oracle registration.

Ah, that's because 7u3 is a final release now ... it was still unreleased/under development the other day. Obtaining unreleased product requires you to be registered with Oracle, but I try to keep my registrations to the minimum.

Anyway, all is good now and the bad old 6.31 is gone.

If 7u3 wasn't there, 7u2 would be and you would have just downloaded that. Haven't downloaded a 6 version in ages. I always goto that page and have never registered for anything. On the main oracle.com page, it's "Downloads -> Java for Developers" to get to it. If you choose "Java for your computer", you'll get the old 6 version still.

If you choose "java for developers" though, that doesn't mean you have to download the jdk. You can just download the jre.

burnout426, I'm talking final release product here, not betas.
631 was only final-released a few days ago - the first post on this thread is 16 Feb.
The JRE runtime final release jumped from 631 to 7u3 - since yesterday. The last published release was 631 - I was auto-updated a few days ago to 631 - that's when the trouble started. I think they pushed out 7u3 - I wasn't the only one with problems - this new final release came out only 3 or 4 days after the final release of 631, which is unusual.

Anyway, all is well now.

This is the problem I was happening. I uninstalled it then just went and installed whatever JRE was the newest version. I then had to uninstall it again and hunt around for 7U3 that other people had on their computers. Luckily, 7U3 has been released so now there doesn't have to be anymore hunting for it.

That stable releases of Java are always so far behind. I wouldn't recommend using them.

There have usually not been problems, until this last release. I've been doing this stuff for so long I'm not a beta-guy anymore. All this computer stuff is just another appliance now ... no more chasing the latest thing - burnout(!), I guess. But to push out a new release immediately after the last new release probably means they had a problem which had to be fixed.
Cheers, RB

Same problem here. Changed to Java 7U3 and Opera keeps crashing. Can't even access my bank account. Other browsers work normally. Given that, and also the fact that the problem apparently begun when Opera was updated to the latest version, it seems fair to assume that the problem lies - at least in part - with the newest version of Opera, not with Java. Any suggestions?

Update: Opera stopped crashing when I uninstalled older versions of Java. With Chrome I am informed that I am indeed running Java 1.07. However, none of the same online tests for the presence/version of Java (including the one at http://java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp) work with Opera. All I get is a blank page.

Aleph99, the big problems arose with ver 631, 7u3 seemed to fix everything.
Opera was not the problem; it was Java 631, which they fixed in a hurry.
I have no problem with the Java test page on 7u3. Maybe you need to flush the Java cache, if that doesn't work uninstall Java (even the newest one) and start fresh.
You may be familiar with the program JavaRa, which also gives a complete clean of previous versions. If not, trying it won't hurt and it may flush something missed using another removal method.

After painful hours having java problems and because I use Firefox and Opera (usually plugins, addons, flash, and whatnot are for IE,Firefox and Safari; and Opera and Chrome are considered separately ) ...its seems a disadvantage sometimes using two browsers from different 'categories'.

Anyways, read and put to the test (no more crashes so far <nervous>):

- Using 32 bit browser, use 32 bit java even if in x64 OS

- have a clean install, as mentioned, recommended solutions are

http://singularlabs.com/software/javara/ --- to uninstall what remains, and
http://keyliner.blogspot.mx/2011/05/java-control-panel-icon-application-not.html --- to remove if necessary the java control panel icon if is not removed

- JRE 6 u 31 (at this moment) works on Opera and Firefox (remember if using x32 or x64) but JSE 7's JRE is recommended only for developers as stated in http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/java7.xml

- JSE 7's JRE x64 made my Opera(32 bit) crash in win x64

As I'm learning programming in java I need JDK 7 x64 so I have to be careful to deactivate JSE 7's JRE in the control panel

PS
Whole PC crashed when visiting widgets.opera.com, which I have to be careful now when visiting faint

Good day all

I had troubles with JAVA applet, couldn't even pass java test on JAVA.com page. Opera kept hanging.
The solution was to copy "msvcr71.dll" from "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin" to "C:\WINDOWS\system32".
I also copied "msvcr100.dll" from "C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin" to "C:\WINDOWS\system32". Just in case smile

Now Opera works fine!

The fix was found on this site: http://mindprod.com/jgloss/opera.html
