Which Linux do you use

Which one of these is your main Linux desktop?
You could provide some arguments for your choice, also there is an "Other/Specify" option wink

Anyone using some flavour of the above (e.g. Kubuntu) shoud not choose Other bigsmile
This poll is a multiple choice answer, so if you have two (or more) computers using different Linuxes choose them both.

What's your main Linux desktop?

I'll go first:
I use Suse from time to time, it's the only one i've tried so far but looking forward on testing Ubuntu, Gentoo and Debian.

I see you allowed multiple votes ...

I have Mandrake 2006 on my main system, and SuSE (actually openSUSE 10) and Fedora core 3 on my other system. Though I don't like FC3. I also have a Knoppix 4.02 Live CD.

sgunhouse, Knoppix doesn't count, it's just a live CD/DVD os p

But isn't Ubuntu (and Kubuntu) a Debian distro?
Yes it is a Debian based distribution but it's "marketed" under a different name and by a different company.

I had been using Zenwalk for some months, but I really enjoy more QT apps and KDE is just fine too so I'm on SuSe now. I got tired of maintaining all my own apps apart from Zenwalk. I'd rather spend more time working on my PC than building my OS. bigsmile

SuSe 10 with KDE updated to 3.5.1. I find it a full feature and well rounded distro. YAST makes some things pretty simple, although it is a hefty app if your running older hardware for sure. You can always do things from command line if you prefer. KDE itself runs fine even on my old k6-2 450 with 256MB RAM.

That's why I only voted for Mandriva, SUSE, and Fedora, and not "Other". p

Theoretically, you can install Knoppix, but I haven't done so.

Mandriva 2006 and (k)Ubuntu Dapper, I chose them because they are easy to use for n00bs. I prefer Mandriva, all the management tools seems better especially to Kubuntu's, which still seems a bit buggy.... I guess if you're a complete n00b to PC's Mandriva might actually even be easier to use than XP (with SP) becuase it gives a much completer install and easy update and install options.

Reports indicate Ubuntu is the leading distro, with 25% user share. So I guess that's expected ...

Mandriva 2006... it's bloated and slow.. but aren't all other linux distrobutions? but its easy to use and stable.
you wanna know why linux sucks so much ? it's because of the x server.

I was talking about Mandriva specifically... for some reason KDE runs slow on it.

From a debian user here, when I summarize the current results, I get:

16% Mandrake
14% SuSE
16% Fedora
33% Ubuntu
2% Slackware
7% Red Hat
10% Gentoo
16% Debian
0% DSL
9% Other/Specify

In total that is 123%, which sounds like a very nice number for Linux adoption bigsmile
And the result bar doesn't show any difference between 16% and 33%.

It's a multiple answers poll, that's why the totals are higher than 100%.
And as for the result bar not being different between 16 and 33%, have you tried a refresh?

Oh, ok... The result bar is OK in Opera, but not in Konqueror (3.5), Safari (1.3) or Firefox (1.5).
Hm, that was weird.

Yes, the bars are caped at around 12-15% under FF but look fine under IE 6.
And as for Konqueror and Safari they use the same rendering engine (KHTML, afaik) so no wonder they look the same.

Konqueror and Safari are not *exactly* the same. They are broadly the same but occasionally render pages differently.

I am using Gentoo. Have tried Fedora with the Gnome DM, but didn't find it to my liking. I also briefly tried Suse. I found it somewhat difficult to customise - e.g. how do you add apllications if they're not on the CDs? Other than that I liked Suse as a distribution - very nicely polished and stable on my old machine, but it has some bloat since it's based on binaries.

Gentoo is the most customisable by the end user system that I have used so far. That's mainly why I like it. smile

Mick

Had SUSE 10, but strange resolution setup, not full media support... got mandriva 2006! now can play most wmv, mpg etc, also macromedia flash for linux works!

Yes, its KDE, but its fast enough... it'll beat w2k on the same machine!!! smilesmile

You're right about Safari and Konqueror, my bad for being ignorant :|
And as for Suse, it has YaST to handle installs.

I use pclinuxos. It is kde based and is a very polished, nice looking distro that is able to play most multimedia files ootb. I like ubuntu's dapper to keep up with gnome happenings but the forums there are growing so big it has (for me) lost any sense of belonging. I guess that's the problem with success?

I chose Gentoo. Personally I prefer FreeBSD, but when I do choose a Linux solution I'm more likely to choose Gentoo. I've also used FC, RHEL, Mandrake (before the Mandriva days), SuSE and Debian. Of these, I was most impressed with FC and Debian. Still can't bring myself from the BSD's though.

Konqueror and Safari are technically the same engine, but the Konqueror team has had difficulties trying to port Apple's updates back to their code. We discussed that back when Apple got Safari to pass Acid2, and were debating about how long it would be for Konqueror to do the same.

But really, this whole thread would be better in the Off-topic/Linux forum (since it isn't about Opera). We're a bit more lax here than in the Windows-related forums, but I'm not doing my job if I don't say that. (Too bad in the new forums I can't move threads to the Lounge, my only options are to leave it where it is, close it, or delete it.)

I can move things within the on-topic (Community) forums, or within the off-topic (Lounge) forums, and I think I could move something from off-topic to on-topic. Maybe one of the webmasters could move it the other way, but I can't. It's because the off-topic forums are now a separate group. While you can access them from the Community page - which is why I can move stuff from there to here - you can't access a community forum from a Lounge page.

The old forum - prior to last September - had no "groups", so things could be moved anywhere.

Surprisingly, if I split the thread, I can put the new thread anywhere - even into groups that I'm not a moderator of.

If you want I could help you out here. I'll just make some extremely rude and antagonistic comments about some of the distros that have been mentioned, and then back it up with some more incredibly offensive slander (and a few personal attacks while I'm at it for good measure). Then you can split off that part, move it to D&D, and then port the remaining thread to Community.

How about I just close it, if he wants to continue his poll he knows where it should be.
