Where is the comment form of my posts?

I can't see the comment form in some posts of my blog (e.g. http://my.opera.com/rafaelluik/blog/2011/10/14/two-unearned-iphone-merits), even in some posts that already have some (http://my.opera.com/rafaelluik/blog/2011/09/10/speed-dial-2-0-the-big-fish-show-off-some-teeth), but I can see in others!

Is My Opera under a technical problem right now? Because I haven't opted to close the comments on these posts...

One presumes you've already checked access rights on that post to make sure people can (still) post comments? You'll have to click on Edit for that post to see its settings. (Since the settings can be changed when you edit the post, it is possible to have had comments but not allow new comments.)

I've noticed this, too, and asked about it on Twitter. (Being lazy I was going to wait until after weekend to start a thread on this. doh The good keen man Raphael, of course, didn't wait. up)

In my case, the posts that were on the first page of my blog retained the commenting facility. But those not in the first page had no comment form at the bottom. I had per page posts set to 6. When I noticed the issue, I thought I might be able to rectify it by increasing the per page posts number. But despite increasing per page posts to 10, the posts 7 and later were, and still are, missing the commenting facility.

Steve, blog access right setting blog commenting privilege setting [Edit] is global. Not per post.

I wonder if community developers were planning to implement per post access comment setting and did some trial, which backfired. confused

I am missing the comment box also on some of my posts.
So is Mette.
Mette's blog:

http://my.opera.com/Pusilille/blog/

I have a friends only post where comments can be made but another friends only post the comment box is gone. Then another post I made friends only then changed to private the box was gone but stayed gone after putting it back to friends only.

I have clicked edit on each post and do not see where it has access rights.
All I see is:

Post settings:

Notify me about new comments Sticky Disable smilies

and the Notify me about new comments is checked.

I agree with mimi_s_mum, something backfired.

Is there another place to check the settings? I looked under account and Privacy & password and also under Blog settings.

I have:
Default post access:
Public

Allow comments?
Yes

Allow anonymous comments
Yes

I do not know of any settings where you can allow no comments on one post only.

Help please.

Thank you.

Confused, how can one do that? Do not see where or how.

Hi!

We're trying out a new way to combat comment-spam, which involves automatically disabling comments 30 days after the last comment was added to a blog post. We're working on improving this, mainly in two ways:

1. Making it optional, so you can choose if you still want to receive comments to blog posts regardless of how long ago the last comment was added.
2. Showing a text like "Comments disabled for this post" instead of the comment-form when comments have been disabled.

We would have liked to have these last two things ready before we released this feature, but due to the amount of spam recently we felt a need to get it out ASAP. We're prioritizing getting those last two features ready now, so hopefully you'll be able to disable this soon, if you want to.

Thank you for your reply, Andreas. I had a vague feeling the explanation of the situation might be something like that. But not being able to make comment even at my own blog made me think it was a bug (or a backfire wink)

Yes, please. As soon as possible, like, right now! p And please let friends comment at each other's blog without any limitation. Some of my friends are having a long breaks from blogging. They would not know their friend no longer could comment at their blog. sad

One thing that puzzles me, though, is the discrepancy in handling the comment privilege setting. Why can we not have per post comment setting, like we have per photo album comment setting? If we had the ability to set who can comment per post, then we can implement our own limitation according to how bad comment spam attacks are, without community wide measures such as this one. Wouldn't it be easier for you developers, too? confused

3. "Comment waiting for approval" system might also be a good idea.

Do spammers really comment on old posts much?

Hopefully, sticky posts should default to allowing comments - at least, that seems reasonable to me.

As far as #3 ... wouldn't help much on the "I saw your profile" type scammers - you know "contact me at my email address and I'll send you photos and other details". Since the only person those scammers are concerned about seeing their post is the blog owner, they are still reaching their target audience. No idea whether we get more of those or actual spam (where they want the general public to be able to see it) ...

Well, I think we should at least let the owner can comment at their own posts. By that way, even we still don't have the function to give others permission to comment, the date of last comment still can be updated. So it may be "manually refreshed" by the owner. The number of re-opened posts is not so hight and, the owners are aware of those posts, so if there are some spams, they can notice and remove them.

To keep the old friend or give some bloggers who come back after a long time without logging in a chance to post on their friend's old topic may be needed.

The idea is a good one if you also put a caveat allowing a potential commentator the possibility of informing the owner of the blog the comment box is null. Maybe allowing it to be opened for further discussion.

Some Forums move the blog thread up to the front page when a new comment occurs. (I'm thinking Project Beehive -home forum:
Teh Forum (NSFW) but it also occurs in Usenet so the idea isn't all that new.) Why not bump the thread rather than signal a new subscription with a red flag?

I'd consider it safe to say that your friends should always be able to comment as well. If one of your friends turns out to be a spammer, you need to be more careful picking people to be your friends.

I've only had a couple of people post spam on my blog. Then again, if someone does I can ban them - so either way I'd set all my posts to allow anyone to comment at any time. I know from seeing the reports that some of you do attract a lot more readers - and spammers - than I do ...

My work got very busy 5-6 months ago. There were several blogs I had said, 'I'm busy right now. Will come back to take a better look when I've down time.' to. Now when finally I have some free time to read their posts properly and leave decent comments, the commenting facility is removed. cry

This will end up cutting any ongoing discussion and make people unable to post a comment in old blog entries like pinned ones... And I also see some people using blog posts to chat, another thing people will have problem with.

Who are you to dictate what Opera should be doing about spam? YOU are not the one who has to spend money on keeping the site spam free. YOU want Opera to waste lots of money just because you say so?

If you want it done differently, pay for the "real spam protection" yourself!

Money spent on better spam comment control measures would not be wasted IMHO. Opera as a company is expanding into the online services market, as we see in the recent public launch of MyOpera Mail service. Those online service users are also current or potential users of software from Opera, who bring in more revenues through OEM and search partnership. You of all people would not want see Opera losing its customers because of spams, would you, being one of the most loyal protectors of Opera? wink

Not dictating, just stating the issue of the decision to combat spam by blocking everyone to comment instead of by a regular spam protection. (Now they changed the settings of everyone to "never to friends" [Just saying...])

I don't remember ever getting spam on my blog, but I see some spam on Opera News and other official blogs and it's easily detectable (aways the same comment content)... Shouldn't be easy to block those? Millions in cash aren't needed ok? bigsmile

Yes, true. Why doesn't Opera just blacklist those fake websites, only the ones which are used in 80% of comments marked spam???

It would be easier just to use a registration question on the My Opera registration page. It won't stop live spammers (IP ban hammers can fix that though), but the question will pretty much kill all automated spam until those bots are reprogrammed to answer the question. And when that happens, My Opera staff can just switch the question to rebreak all the spam bots.
