how - make opera mail default from hotmail

Hi all, sorry if this appears old hat or covered before, but, we are old foggies (wishing we were under 70 ) and rather new to these machines but were not so here goes. we would like to have opera mail as our default so we only get or send mail through opera as we are impressed with opera, however we have made the mistake of starting with windows live messenger hotmail running on our windows 7. so can we not just delete hotmail off our computer and carry on with opera ?. we have been into our default settings but do not find opera mail ( we do have opera as our default browser. IF any replies, please can we have it in english ! we are still learning how and what buttons do what. thank you, also just starting is an error message saying - timed out, what is this please, getting quite confused now.

Hi pennyblack,

Welcome to Opera smile

I'll ask you a few questions to determine how we can be of more help.

There are a few options when it comes to email with Opera. Are you interested in using Opera's built-in email client (which comes built in to the Opera web browser), or are you interested in using Opera's web-based email? The difference is that with Opera's web-based email, you are able to read your email from any computer or phone in any web browser.

You are still able to keep your hotmail.com address if you so desire in either case. Would you like to do so, or would you like a new email address?

Regarding the error message saying "timed out", it sounds as though you may have tried to set up an account with Opera's built-in email client incorrectly. This particular help forum is for Opera's web-based email mentioned above (confusing isn't it!).

So if you let me know what you'd like to do, I'll move this question to the appropriate forum where someone can help you further.

Regards

If you would like to try our web based email service, go to http://mail.opera.com/ or just click on the little "mail" icon in the top right hand corner of this page. Bear in mind that with a web-based service, you can only read your email when you have access to the Internet.

You can sign in with the same credentials as you have here.
pennyblack will be your username, and your email address will be your_username@myopera.com

You can continue to receive messages from your hotmail address through My Opera Mail too, as no doubt some of your friends will still send messages to it.
In order to do so, after you have logged in to http://mail.opera.com/ click on "Settings" (top right hand corner) followed by "Accounts". Here you can type your hotmail username and password in, and we'll fetch your hotmail directly to your My Opera Mail.

Let me know if you have any questions or feedback, and I'd be happy to help. smile
Please do not email me directly unless requested to do so. Thanks!

again, many thanks, however may we just ask - when we have followed all your instructiuons, can we just delete hotmail off our computer. because once we have our opera mail we would be notifying all our connections/friends of our new email address. or is deleting hotmail not an option. as we would like to have just 1 address and that to be opera.

I would recommend running both at the same time for a period until you are confident that the new setup meets your needs.

If you really have no further use for your old email, I don't see any reason why you would need to keep it smile

Hotmail itself is what we call a "cloud" email solution, similar to My Opera Mail. This means that you can "delete" which ever program you use to view your email on your computer, whilst still keeping your messages on their server (so, they'll keep a copy of them in case you ever need them again).

You can then retrieve them at a later state should you need to again, by visiting www.hotmail.com with your web browser.
Please do not email me directly unless requested to do so. Thanks!

re making my default email client "hotmail"
the answers given avoid the required answers...
if i am in, eg Vodafone site, and it offers "email us" i am offered opera mail or Yandex !!!!!
I NEED HOTMAIL, its a simple question. who uses Yandex ???, half the world uses hotmail.
dear Opera , just make hotmail one of the choices
