Disappearing email bodies
Hello,I'am using Opera for long time. Some time ago I decided to use built in email client, so i made migration and so on, this was one year ago. Today I had to find email from last year but only header was there no body. This was strange so I read few posts here and what I had investigated:
- sent box has only emails from this year (2012) all other has only header body is empty
- incoming messages body is invisible too but when I do synchronization it downloads it from server, but only for messages which are not older than 08.12.2011. All messages since begin exists on email server never deleted.
- mail profile folder is empty for older messages
Question is what's going on? Is there some magic trick in opera which deletes bodies from disk or block download email bodies from server. If this will still occur I will have to change my email client.
Need to know Opera version, OS, what type of accounts you have (IMAP or POP and whether you have feeds, newsgroups and IRC accounts too). Also, it sounds like you've been upgrading. What was the last build you upgraded from?
Also, if IMAP, does a log show that the server supports qresync?
Do you have low-bandwidth mode turned on? Or, if IMAP, do you have just "do not download attachments" set?
If POP, do you have "leave messages on server" checked and are all messages that are in Opera still on the server or no?
All accounts are POP. Leave messages on server for all accounts is ON. All messages are still on server. Low-bandwitch? You mean opera-turbo if yes than NO.

No, it's a low-bandwidth mode for mail that's separate to Opera turbo. If you don't know what it is, I'll assume it's off. The setting is on the incoming tab in the account's properties though. It's also under "Menu -> Mail". Just wanted to make sure that's off.

Add the "period" button from "shift + F12 -> buttons -> mail" to the toolbar above the message list. Then, for each view, make sure the period is set to "forever".

Hmm, that's odd. Probably no way to fix that mail folder then.
Here's what I do first. Set up all the POP accounts (do not import and do not uncheck "leave messages on server") in a standalone installation. See if everything works fine there.
If so, then, since all your messages are still on the server, you should be able to:
1. Goto "Menu -> settings -> import and export -> export Opera contacts".
2. Close down Opera and delete the mail folder. (Back it up somewhere safe first though.)
3. Delete contacts.adr in the preferences folder.
4. Start Opera and add all your POP accounts back in and import your contacts.
That should fix everything. You'll lost all your sent messages though and you'll have to reorganize your messages into labels and setup rules etc. again.
To save your sent messages, use the account selector to only show messages in "All Messages/Sent" for one account at a time. Then, right-click on "All Messages/Sent" and choose "export" and save each account's sent messages to an mbs file. Then, when you have the new mail folder set up, you can goto "Menu -> setttings -> import and export -> import mail -> import generic mbox -> add mbox" and point it to the mbs file. Then, you pick what account to import into and set the mbs file in the "move to sent" drop-down. Note though that if some your sent messages have no bodies, you should just delete them as they're no good.
If all your messages weren't on the server, you'd have to do <http://my.opera.com/operawiki/forums/topic.dml?id=1162442> instead.

Don't know what happened, but something got messed up. I don't know what exactly, so all I can do is tell you how to get your mail back. The only time that bodies shouldn't be downloaded in full by default is if you have low-bandwidth mode turned on. Opera should never remove the bodies of messages unless you permanently delete them. It's weird that syncing with the server makes them work.
When you test with the standalone installation, if everything doesn't work right, you might want to log the connection. Perhaps it's a bug on the server.
I'm experiencing exactly the same problem. I'm running Opera Version 11.61 (upgraded from 11.60)
Versjonstep 1250 , Platform: Win32, System: Windows 7 (though I'm using Win7 in 64bit mode)
I've been using Opera Mail since 2001, and I've been though lots of upgrades, but this is the first time it looks like I have lost any emails. All email headers and content older than 2009 are blank, and what display. Does anyone have a solution to this? On some of my other email accounts, the problem with the blank headers and content starts as early as 22nd February 2012.
Any help are greatly appreciated.

Any suggestions?

Since I had lot's of emails, and most of them were not on the server I tried the route <http://my.opera.com/operawiki/forums/topic.dml?id=1162442> and it worked fine.
After I set up the account and imported the old emails from the old account folder, I discovered that all my sent emails ended up in the sent folder too, so I didn't have to do anything extra. Great. Also, since I had been able to download emails all the way until the restore point, I just deleted all duplicated unread emails just downloaded from the server as they were also located in the import folder. This way, I didn't have to clean up all mails once again (deleting all unwanted mails), since I had already done that with my original mails that were located under the import account folder. This turned out to be easiest way as it's simple to just show all unread emails, and delete them all.
