Deselect a message

Hi!

When i have selected a message (mail, feed etc) in a folder, there seems to be no way to deselect it if the list of messages is going from top to bottom. If the list of messages (in the selected folder) is not "full", i can click below the list, and the message area shows "No message selected". Otherwise, I cannot find anywhere to click to deselect the message.

This is very annoying whenever I am revisiting a folder, and my last selected message gets selected, and I get scrolled down beneath that message in the list. Have I ever read an old message, i must manually scroll to the top to see newer messages.

The scrolling and remembering of the last selected message would be OK, if only there was a way to deselect (close) a selected message, even when the list of messages is full.

Thank you

I am using Opera 11.61 Build 1250 Platform Win32 System Windows 7

That's my experience too. And you're right, it can be annoying. But I don't think there's anything that can be done about it, barring a fix in a future upgrade.

As in bookmarks — ctrl + click to deselect.

<http://my.opera.com/operawiki/forums/topic.dml?id=1144172> has some info on this. Some recent changes kind of broke it a little. Then, it got fixed mostly. But, the trick to click on the right side of a maximized Opera to deselect all messages doesn't seem to work anymore for me. At least ctrl + left-click does though.

Also note that the ctrl + click to select/deselect an item in the list to add/remove it from the selection isn't an arbitrary way of doing it. It's pretty much standard for lists across programs and across operating systems. Shift + click selects a range (adjusting the selection from the nearest selected item to the one you shift-clicked on). "Menu -> page -> select all" (or ctrl + a) works to select all items.

But, the problem here is that Opera doesn't give you an option to always focus the top/bottom of the list so that you don't have to do the deselect trick.

Thank you for your answers!

I have not yet tested it, but will, and hope it will work.

Ctrl + click might seem logical, but I couldn't figure it out. An even more common way to deselect something in programs and operating systems is to click somewhere else, which works in this case, but only if your list is short enought to not fill the screen. I was also looking for a little close button (an x) somewhere in the top right of the message, but there is none.

The always scroll functionality might seem annoying, but I guess I can learn to always deselect my messages now that I know how to.

Now I have tested it, and deselecting using ctrl + click seems to work, but only temporarily.

When I re-enter a folder or label, the previously selected message gets selected again, even though I deselected it before leaving the folder. This means that I get scrolled down to that message again, which is as previously stated very annoying.

Can't confirm this myself.
