launch aborts
Every attempt to launch Opera (incl version 12) aborts instantaneously (within a tiny fraction of a second). This started when I migrated to a new Mac Book Pro in November 2011; no trace of the abort appears in Mac's Console; replacing old copy of Opera with a brandnew copy downloaded TODAY has not helped; strangely, I do not find any Opera files on the Mac.
I have no idea how to trouble-shoot this problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
You could try to reset Opera by removing all user data. Delete the following folders in your Home folder:
~/Library/Opera
~/Library/Application Support/Opera
~/Library/Caches/Opera
You could also try starting Opera from your system’s Guest account (enable it from System Preferences: Users: Guest).
Do you get a crash dialog with a Opera icon or a system crash dialog?

It is very weird, but my Home folder (i.e. the folder dedicated to me as a named user, right?) does not contain a Library folder!
Am running 10.7.3. Should there be a Library folder here?
On the older machine (with 10.6.8) there is a Library folder (represented by the "Library" icon) in my Home folder.
The numerous other applications I use work as they should.
What would you recommend? My guess is Opera insists on finding a certain folder hierarchy, and quits when it doesn't find it.
By the way, there is no crash dialog.

Am able to launch Opera when logged in as another user. It is version 11.61, build 1287 (not version 12).
Using Command-Shift-G, I deleted all Opera-related folders when logged in as myself. Also deleted and reinstalled Opera itself. On first attempt to launch, MacOS warned me that I was about to launch an application downloaded from the Internet etc. When I clicked OK the launch aborted. On subsequent attempts, it just aborted (with no message) in a fraction of a second.
Obviously, something is interfering with Opera in that one user's account, but what is it? The Console tells me nothing.
There must be some way of seeing exactly what is going on. I could theoretically reinstall the system and rebuild my files and reinstall my applications step by step, but that would takes many days.
Any thoughts on what to do next?

Hm. Got any plug-ins? Fonts? Helper applications (often things that manages windows)? anything running in the background? or other things that only exist in your account?
If you look at the crash log, you will probably see the name of the application or helper that causes the crash.
When you identify it, please let us know so we can look into the issue!
