Tab stacking and autocomplete in the address bar

Hi!

I recently converted to Opera from Chrome. I do like Opera much, but there are some things I don't like.

When I move tabs around, I often stack them by error. How can I disable tab stacking?

Earlier, when I began typing a website in the address bar (e.g. Facebook.com), it would type out the whole name for me. That way I wouldn't have to type the whole website address. But now it somehow doesn't do that any more. How can I get that again?

Thanks in advance for all you help!

Currently, tab stacking can't be disabled - you just have to be careful where you drop tabs.

While I doubt that you would have disabled it accidentally, the setting for addressbar autocompletion is found in opera:config. It is called "Addressbar Inline Auto Completion", searching for "inline" is the quickest way to find it. Make sure that it is enabled (checked), if it was not enabled then you'll have to enable it and click on Save. But as I say, it doesn't seem like you would have disabled it accidentally - if that's not the answer I'm not really sure what is though.

Also try giving your favourite bookmarks nicknames in the Bookmarks properties dialogue, e.g. FB = Facebook, then just type the nick name and press enter.

Open the Bookmarks panel, and edit the bookmark properties to add nick names.

It is checked, but I can't get the auto completion to work. What could it be? It worked for me earlier this week.

I have the newest (if it updates automatically) Opera on Win7.

11.61 is the latest stable version, there are also beta versions of 11.62 and alpha versions of 12.00 available. By default it updates automatically (to stable versions), though some people disable that.

If you have emptied your history or if some other program has removed it, then Opera would have nothing to autocomplete with - that's the only other thing I can think of.

I visited wimp.com yesterday, it doesn't autocomplete. I just tried typing facebook.com to go to facebook, and then open a new tab to see if it autocompletes.

I have full history for a week or so. Maybe some program deleted it? I don't have history from earlier this month, even though I have used opera for a few months.

When I go to Preferences -> Advanced -> History, it is set to remember 1000 addresses for autocomplete.

I believe it is fully updated:

11.61

I just updated to the new version of Opera - 11.62, but I Opera still doesn't auto-completes in the URL. Maybe I should go back to Chrome?

Try this:

Go to Menu > Help > About Opera and take note of Opera directory. Close Opera.

Open Opera's directory on Explorer (or similar on you OS), look for the file "typed_history.xml" and rename iy to "typed_history.old".

(Re)Start Opera, type a few addresses and then check if autocomplete now works.

Thanks, but it doesn't seem to work.

Maybe if I re-install Opera?

Install Opera in a new directory using the usb mode and do some tests do see if the problem also happens.

Yes that works, thanks a lot!

Now, do I have to run every time from the USB, or is there something I can do with my current install? Preferably something other than re-installation.

Thanks in advance!

Try renaming operaprefs.ini

Note that you may loose some settings.
