[Image viewing] don't scale image, use zoom!

Hi all!

As we all know, Opera shrinks images that area larger than the browser to fit the window (which is fine with me). However, this is done by resizing the image itself. So, when you want to zoom in on the image, it does not work, but the image stays fitted to the window size. I know that you can work around this by first clicking on the image to undo the resizing, but that's not really good usability, is it? wink

So: a better solution would be to adjust the zoom for the image to the correct size to fit the screen, so that the user can then zoom in and out as he pleases more easily.

PS: I apologize if any thread like this is around already, I wasn't aware of it albeit monitoring the wish list constantly.

and provide option to force 100% zoom on picture by default, so everyone happy with it.

this would be good, along with an option to set the 'default minimum' zoom - so if you always wanted no zoom, it could be set to 100. (personally i would like no default zooming as the default, with the left click zooming out to view all if you need it)
another thing id like is for it to zoom to the largest size that fits either side of your screen, rather than the smallest; it would make tall or wide pictures much more bearable (especially when theres text involved)

well thatd be my ideal anyway

sorry, kinda veered off the main point there. but still, +1 to original

Yes. Zooming images and option to set default zoom amount when opening images would be good feature.

It was a nasty surprise. This feature (or bug, I'm not sure) and other issues is why I want to either roll back to 10.6x or switch to another browser. Looks like Opera becomes less usable with every update.

I'm not against any improvement, but when unsuccessfully tried to zoom on a picture my first reaction was "What the heck? Is this a bug or now it works this way?", the second was "All right, where can I set it to some more friendly behaviour or if that's not possible, where can I disable it?", well, looks like I can't do either. This feature added nothing except an unnecessary click when I want to zoom in, it may be useful to some people, but for me it's a bug.

Then it sounds as though you need to post your OWN topic in the Desktop wish-list thread.

Quit your trolling! Its not a bug. If you don't like it install the image autoresizer extension, and set the preferences to what you want (original size by default?)

1. I'm not trolling.

2. Thanks for the link but that extension works only if Javascript is enabled by default. Not the wisest thing to do.

The good news: big images are not actually resized, just zoomed to fit to window which is fine in itself, but Opera overrides manual zooming to a larger size and that's the problem. It's better than it looked at first sight.

It has to fit the view port, whatever the user's current page zoom factor, and whatever the size of the view port happens to be — try restoring the window with an image loaded and see what happens.

This wish is a forlorn one since you cannot have both "fit to window" and resize the image when zooming the page. First you have to disable "fit to window" for page zoom to work.

In fact, the image gets slightly smaller as you zoom in because the padding around the image when "fit to window" is enabled is increased at higher zoom factors.

The real size and resolution of the file does not change, it's not resized as you thought, but there is no way to disable "fit to window" by default.

Sorry to say so, but that add on does not work with useful scripts, so its useless.

Your comment is useless without saying which "useful" scripts you need that don't work when the imagesizer script is enabled. All you can really say is that its useless for you.

Yes, its optimal usability. Fit to window that increase the image size on zooming would no longer fit the window would it? How would your feature request work in practice? How would the user get back to "Fit to Window" after zooming in to, say, 500% with scroll or keyboard shortcuts to take a closer look? How would it work for someone who uses a default zoom of 120% instead of 100%?

Currently, after clicking to view at original size (+ default or current page zoom), the user can zoom in as desired. Then click to fit to the window again.

not really

by just clicking the image again, like atm you toggle between fit to window and not fit to window.

does not really matter, as we are not talking about web pages here, but images -> the two zooms should be handled separately obviously.
