Java not working.

I can't get latest Java to work with Opera but it is working on an old Firefox browser.

I am using an old Acer Aspire One netbook running Linpus Lite - Fedora based. It still has the original Moz Firefox V2 running but as that was getting wonky with some web sites (especially eBay) I installed Opera 10.63. The other available browsers on the repositories were dated and non really functional. Could not get Opera 11 to work on the machine though. Opera 10.63 runs OK but does not like my netbank site so go back to Firefox for that. Opera hit a snag with some sites running java so I went through the process of installing latest Java 1.6.0.31. The rpm version installed in /usr/java. I then tried to do the link discovery process as follows

cd /usr/lib/opera/plugins
ln -s /usr/java/jre1.6.0_31/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so

That seemed to go ok but when I go to the Java test site it says it is not installed properly. When I run the old Firefox on the same test site it says I have the recommended Java installed (1.7.0). Not sure why it says ver 7.

Have I got the link/discovery line wrong or is there some other trick people know about?

On the About Opera tab it shows Opera 10.63 - Linux i686, 2.6.23.91w

PS: My first post on Opera and a bit of a novice with Linux - I just love using my little old netbook and continue dabbling in Linux to keep it going and useful.

Is Opera detecting the plugin? Try typing in: opera:plugins in the address bar. The plugin path in Opera can be set from Preferences (Ctrl + F12 or Alt + p) > Advanced > Content > Plug-in Options.

The package management system can have symlinks to Java that may have been broken.

You might want to check these blog posts. Systems change and these may be old.

My Opera is detecting other plugins such as adobe, mplayer and shockwave but is not detecting java.

I have tried the manual application of symlinks as in one of the links you provided - it is similar to what I had already tried - but it did not work.

I think I might remove Opera 10.63 and install an earlier version that does not require the java installation. The Opera currently installed sometimes drops out so going to an earlier version may solve that as well.
