Opera mail client misbehaving with gmail IMAP - downloading thousands empty emails and more

Hi,

I hope that some one can give me some pointers here.

Using Windows 7 64 bit latest updates service packs etc along with latest Opera.

Have been using Opera mail client to connect to my gmail account via IMAP on my laptop and desktop.

My laptop (which was on XP) behaved fine - got duplicate emails but I understand that problem. Unfortunately it got sick and died sad

But desktop is driving me insane - so if this message is incoherent in any way you know why.

On starting Opera it loads its database, downloads RSS feed headers, and connects to email accounts - I have one other (besides gmail) IMAP account that behaves fine.

When connecting to gmail at start up Opera begins to fetch thousands of emails including hundreds of copies of emails that I have permanently deleted and hundreds of empty emails. Knowing the problem I can stop it fetching emails once I see that it has started to do this. I can then tell Opera to check my gmail IMAP account and it will then do so in the expected correct manner. However periodically after some time (hours rather than minutes), and I cannot see a pattern to this, it starts to download everything all over again. Sometimes if I close Opera and start it again the empty emails and duplicates disappear after a few seconds but more often they do not.

I appear to have ten or more copies of some old emails saved, but not of others?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Delete the Gmail IMAP account and add it back in. If that doesn't work, export your feed list, your contacts, close down Opera, delete the mail folder, delete contacts.adr in the preferences directory, start Opera and add the accounts back in and import your feed list and contacts.

Do you have low-bandwidth mode enabled? Do you have "make all messages available offline set?

You could also try checking the database.

Are there any Gmail IMAP folders that you're not subscribed to?

Do you have the check interval set to less than 10 minutes?

If you get things working again, avoid deleting or shift + deleting a lot of messages at once as the Gmail IMAP server will have problems and cause Opera to leave things behind in the database, which may cause some funky sync problems. I don't know the exact number, but no more than a few hundred at a time would be a good limit.

You can always log the connection to see if the log shows any errors.

Thanks for answering Burnout.

I don't have low-bandwidth node selected.

I do have make all messages available offline set.

I am not subscribed to Gmail bin, spam, all mail folders

I do have the check interval set at 15 minutes - but despite that there are times when Opera goes into a loop of endlessly polling gmail for a connection until I stop it or Gmail refuses it.

I will try your suggestions.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Burnout,

Having followed your suggestions re:

"If that doesn't work, export your feed list, your contacts, close down Opera, delete the mail folder,
delete contacts.adr in the preferences directory, start Opera and add the accounts back in and import your feed list and contacts."

My gmail IMAP account is working OK for a few days now. Problem seems fixed.

Thanks of your help.
