Session restore backup
Design of Opera session restore/backup (autosave.win + autosave.win.bak) should be reworked.Right now, if autosave.win becomes corrupted (in case of crash or smthg) session history almost for sure is lost.
crush + autosave.win corrupted => you starting opera => opera asks if you want to restore session => opera copies corrupted autosave.win over autosave.win.bak => opera shows you empty tab => you f#cked up
No doubt, such braindamaged design should be reworked.
I've been in such situation 3 times, newer was able to recover anything, even with recovery software.
VERY unpleasant experience.
Current state of win->bak looks extrmely seek. Since version 10.5x and later opera may create corrupted bak file on browser crash.

For many years, my Opera backups have been done with Klsmailbackup.
There is a free version, and, although its name does not indicate it, it can backup all my Opera files, not only the mail ones. You select what you want.

Seems to apply to me, too.
Opera crashes on Exiting
Starting Opera again: [Empty Window]
The now called .win.bak is the just corrupted file.
Renaming doesn't help any more -.-
Pleas create a message if .win is corrupted and .bak is not, so I can choose among [Empty Window] or [Backup]
Cheers

Please, please, please - auto-save sessions more frequently, just as Session Manager for Firefox does!
Opera likes to crash a lot recently. This is already quite annoying and makes me want to switch over to Firefox already,
but the worst part is that on some crashes, the session is lost, which is a MAJOR nuisance for me.
Sometimes, the session is lost even if Opera downloads an update! This is unacceptable.
It would be nice if Opera just kept a few backup auto-saved sessions (2, 3, 4, etc - or user-configurable).

I automatically run a simple Windows batch file every day to back up the sessions file (and one previous day's backup), as I typically have a ton of tabs open and couldn't deal with losing all of them after a crash. But it would be nice if I didn't have to resort to such things.
Looks like this:
c:
cd "\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Opera\Opera\sessions"
copy /y autosave.bk1.win autosave.bk2.win
copy /y autosave.win autosave.bk1.win

I too always have a lot of windows and tabs open, and each time I lose them I swear like crazy.
Opera is crashing much too frequently recently, and choosing to report the crash makes you lose the session.
If you don't report the crash, you get to keep a working backup session most times.
What a shabby way to manage things! It's a strong incentive NOT to report crashes.
Nice tip man, thanks. I'll use your homemade remedy!
EDIT
I reworked your script a little for my own use and I thought I'd share it.
1. I'm on Windows XP, so the AppData folder is in a different location. My version should work on all 32-bit and 64-bit Windows versions up to Windows 7 (and beyond?), because environment variables are used to locate the folder.
2. My version of the script can be used lightheartedly every time I like - even multiple times per day - without worrying about deleting a backup session file, because the backup files are now named something like
autosave-bak_10-Nov-2012_15.48.02.39.win
with date and timestamp in filename, so they never overwrite an old backup.
On the flip side, once in a while you might like to delete the old files, which never get replaced. This might be considered a "feature"

HELP! Is my lost Opera data really lost?
Lost my History (about 5 months worth), NOTES(!!!), Sessions... Lost theme (shadowguard), but reinstalled. Had to reconfigure toolbars & buttons. Had about 25 tabs open, some of which I valued the history of such as wikipedia, allmusic and amazon. Bookmarks seem to be ok. But Notes!! I had hundreds of valued quotes, snippets etc.... all gone!
How did this happen? I downloaded KernelEx. KernelEx allows users of earlier versions of Windows to use programs that only recognize XP or higher. Sounded great! Boy, do I regret it! Uninstalled it. I'm getting a new computer in 5 days anyway. It will come loaded with Ubuntu! But I still want my lost data, especially Notes! Also all saved passwords were lost. Wish I had just been patient instead of messing around. I am still on Win98se, by the way.
Anyhow, is there ANYTHING I can do to recover my Notes. Or my saved sessions that were lost as well?
I am too overwhelmed to even feel depressed.

Can you make a restore ?
Then use KLS, as I wrote in my previous post (april 14th).
You will be able to backup ALL the Opera files (not only the mail ones) on a USB key (for instance).
BTW, it works also from opera x86 to the 64 bit version I have on another computer, provided it is installed in "opera", not "opera next".
Hope this helps,

@toughcustomer, it sounds like Opera is looking for your profile in a different directory. This wouldn't be surprising as Windows XP stored user data in a different place to earlier versions of Windows. If that's the case, *all your data is safe*, you just need to find a way to access it.
