Email account deletion but with message retention

I have recently stopped using a set of POP3 email accounts because I had to relinquish the associated domain name, and switched over to using Gmail accounts instead.

I would like to delete the redundant email accounts from Opera to remove them from the list of accounts displayed when clicking the email "Check/Send" button.

I need to retain the emails which I have received over the years to the redundant accounts, but deleting an account using the "Mail and chat accounts" dialogue automatically deletes the email messages associated with that account.

Is there any way of deleting the accounts but retaining the emails or, alternatively, is there a way of removing the redundant accounts from the list displayed when clicking the "Check/Send" button?

You can just go in the POP account's properties and on the "Incoming" tab, uncheck "check for new messages every..." and uncheck "include this account when checking manually.

They'll still be in the check/send button list, but they won't hurt anything.

You can't get them out of the list though unless you make a custom check/send button.

You close down Opera and edit accounts.ini in the mail folder to remove those account sections. while keeping the next account number at the top the same (but perhaps changing the account count number). But, then you won't be able to access those message in Opera.

You could close down Opera and copy the "store/accountN" folders for those account (where N is the number for the account as seen in accounts.ini). Then, you could delete the accounts through "mail and chat accounts". Then, you can use "Menu -> settings -> import and export -> import mail -> import generic mbox -> add folder" to import each folder into a new local account. Note though that drafts messages for all accounts are stored in "store/drafts", so if you want those, you'll have to pick them out. But, then those import accounts will show up in the check/send list (even though they won't do anything), so you won't get much there. You could install a standalone installation and import them just into that and only load that opera when you need to look at those messages.

Note that if you use the account selector, you can hide other accounts from Opera's views so you only see the account's messages you want to work with at the time.

So, one of those ways will help. If you really want to make a custom check/send button, I can show you how. But, it'll take a little while to figure out and explain.

You could also use Labels only in the left-panel display. I have no accounts visible only Labels all with varying depths of sub-labels.

I do it that way expressly for the reason the OP outlined.

For the old addresses I want hidden I just keep that Label group collapsed so all I see is the master Label "zOtherStuff" I use the "z" to push it to the bottom of the Labels list.
