Opening tabs

Please / Thanks:
1. Am on a webpage
2. Click a link to "open in new tab"
3. Presently, the new tab "takes over my screen" ...
4. How does one change preferences so that when the link is clicked to open a new tab, the screen stays on the initial page but the tab opens unviewed?

Thank ye, thank ye! Amazing what one learns by merely reading pull-downs, huh? Many thanks.
