Making Opera default browser on Mac OSX
I was trying to find a way how to make Opera default browser. It seems the option disappeared from Opera / Preferences / General tab. The option is no longer there. These instructions don't seem to work:
http://www.opera.com/support/kb/view/802/
I searched around and found out you can change it actually from within Safari / Preferences /General.
That's odd.
The instructions on the help document you link to actually suggests to change the setting in Safari (as you later discovered).
Opera will ask if you want to use it as default on start-up if it is not set as default. There is a checkbox in that dialog you can click to never be asked again, though. This is not an ideal solution. We’ll try and make it easier in future versions.

To send mail through a third party mail program, you'll go to Opera > Preferences > Advanced > Programs and click "Add". Choose the protocol "mailto", which is how links to email addresses are prefixed, and select "Open with default application". Opera should tell you what app it's chosen, e.g., "/Applications/Mail.app" and that should change if you ever change your default mailer.
And, as you noticed, if you missed the checkbox, you should use Safari to set the default browser. Maybe Opera can come up with a better way in the future? It seems like the "default browser" setting should be in Control Panel somewhere, rather than in Safari, but Apple will be Apple, and for now the setting is in Safari.
