Spam and Gmail

Dear All,
I am using Opera Mail as a client for gmail via IMAP.
A lot of mail was labeled as spam by opera's spam filer (though this does not affect the content of gmail spam folder i.e. what is considered as spam by gmail).
Now, this is a nuisance but not the end of the world as long as Opera will not delete any email it marks as spam.
I am asking this since for instance mail in my gmail spam folder gets automatically deleted every 30 days, but I hope that opera does not have that policy!
Can you please put my mind at rest?
Many thanks

Opera's spam filter is disabled by default for Gmail accounts.

Opera will not automatically delete your messages. However, if you are using imap and the server deletes the message after X days, then it will be reflected in Opera.

Correct.

In addition, on the "IMAP" tab in the account's properties, "[Gmail]/Spam" is set as the spam folder automatically. This means that when you mark a message as spam in Opera, it'll be moved to "[Gmail]/Spam" where the Gmail server can then add that to its learning. Then, when you mark it as "not spam", it'll be returned to "Inbox" where the Gmail server will learn from that action too.

With "[Gmail]/Spam" set as the spam folder, "All Messages/Spam" will just reflect what's in "[Gmail]/Spam" on the server.

Hi!
I suppose that my funny opera mail behaviour (indeed I had tons of mail marked as spam by opera but not appearing in the gmail/spam folder unless I would mark them manually as spam) was due to the fact that I first created my accounts in the past when opera mail had some troubles with gmail spam.
I deleted my accounts and recreated them from scratch and, a far as I can tell, the problem is gone.
Cheers

I just installed Opera (11.64 b1403, mac osx) and created a bunch of gmail imap accounts. I noticed that the imap pref "Disable local spam filter for this account (server-side filtering)" was UNchecked. I assume this means that Opera's local spam filter was not disabled by default in my case, or are you are referring to something else? This was the case for all gmail accounts that I created. I went ahead and checked this pref on. -tom

Just tested 11.64 on Win7. It's checked by default for me when setting up a Gmail IMAP account.

"Gmail IMAP account" = the use of @gmail.com for the email address in the new account wizard at least. If you have a google apps account where you email address is @domain.com and you use that in the new mail account wizard, that *might* not be the case.

If that doesn't apply, maybe it's just an issue with the mac os Opera.

Thanks for taking the time to test - must be a Mac/Opera thing. All seven account were xxxx@gmail.com imaps using the "Account Wizard" (Tools > Mail and Chat Accounts.. > Add... > Select what kind of account you would like to... > Email > Next > enter gmail accnt info).

Hi,
On Linux with version 12.00 it is not unchecked by default. So my spam view is filled with just about all my emails. It does not have any effect as far as I know but it would be nice to clear this view. Is there a quick way apart from setting up the account again?

So, you mean it's checked by default? That's good.

Mark them as "not spam"?

Note though that "All Messages/Spam" will show all messages in the IMAP spam folder if you have an IMAP spam folder set.

You can file a report if you can reproduce it in a standalone installation.
