This is non-obvious behavior and difficult to discover. It's not mentioned in the help page http://help.opera.com/Linux/11.60/en/search.html. Not sure how the developers expect anyone to know about it.
If a feature can only be discovered by posting questions on a forum, the interface has failed.

Seems to work as the OP expected: Just clicking on a text location sets the current location and starts search from there. Selecting something also works (FF 12.0 Linux).
