That's already the standard behaviour:
a) Select something on the page (to define the "current location") => Search starts from selection
b) Select nothing => Search starts at top

I just tested it, and you are correct. I had tried clicking within the page to establish current location, which has no effect. Highlighting something on the page does give the behavior that I want.
This is non-obvious behavior and difficult to discover. It's not mentioned in the help page http://help.opera.com/Linux/11.60/en/search.html. Not sure how the developers expect anyone to know about it.

I tried in Firefox and could find not any obvious way to do this at all. Is there one?

Seems to work as the OP expected: Just clicking on a text location sets the current location and starts search from there. Selecting something also works (FF 12.0 Linux).
