Awful FTP page layout
I need to point this out because Opera's (Opera 12 RC1 to be precise) FTP page layout is vastly inferior to the one in Firefox (13 and probably any other). And it all has to do with page layout and nothing else.In Firefox, file size and date are packed tightly on the right, leaving plenty of space even for very long file names. Like this:

Opera however, has bunch of empty space between file sizes, dates and even filetype, leaving no space for the filename, making it extend through several lines just to fit in there. Like this:

In general, that's not a problem, but clearly, when you have a folder with bunch of similar named files, it's a total pain in the rear to read the filenames since they are all crumbled in several lines.
I also don't understand why they both use massive amounts of empty space on the left and right side of the FTP page (see the thick arrows) which could be used dynamically if screen allows (which on my widescreen laptop, it does).
For normal users this wouldn't be a problem in general but if you're a beta tester and you often download SVN, beta and other test builds from FTP's, it's a real pain to work with them.
Just make the whole thing more compact so that long filenames will fit into a single line and i'll be happy. If you can make that "tiny" center window to extend almost through the entire page width, i'd be even more happy. Use Firefox as reference. I've never had problems with their FTP page...

Strange ... mine looks more like your FF photo. Fit to width enabled, maybe?
Are you sure you typed the whole address and not just the first line (since that would be a list of directories with relatively short names)?
This has nothing to do with FTP and I too find it very annoying . All folder listings in Opera look like this (e.g type "/" into the address field and examine your local files). The problem is Opera's poor internal HTML page used for the listing - using fixed width HTML table columns. All columns are the same width, which is -well - not very clever.

I didn't use his example, but there was something else I did ... I was using Opera 12 build 1448. Now that I'm using build 1450, it looks like his example.
They must have changed the CSS used to display FTP listings at some point. That would appear in opera:config under the setting "Dir Style File". I'll have to look at the files and see what I can find out ...

It would be nice if this page could be dynamically extended horizontally. I mean look how much space is wasted on left and right side, yet the file names are crumbled together beyond useful recognition.
