”Could not initialize Opera”

Ubuntu 10.10, keeping Opera updated by the Opera Ubuntu PPA.

Yesterday I updated to Opera 12.00, I am not sure what I had before, I guess 11.64 or something. I always update when I can, so I am pretty sure it was the last stable version of Opera 11.

Anyway, after updating, using the Ubuntu update manager, I kept Opera open, running the old version until I closed Opera and then closed Ubuntu.

I just came home from work, starting my computer. Now Opera won't start. Nothing happens. When I start it from the gnome-terminal, all I get is the message ”Could not initialize Opera”.

I have tried most of the available flags, such as --nomail and --nosession but still the same result.
I renamed ~/.opera to ~/.opera.old, but still the same result.

If Opera no longer supports Ubuntu 10.10, where can I find the most recent Opera 11 version?

Suggestions how to debug this problem? I am not sure where to start…

Then we are two unlucky bastards… I use Firefox now until I can get it fixed, and it really, really sucks! I'm used to working with Opera since v 5.1 or so, so everything I do in Firefox takes at least twice as long (probably since I am not able to use its features yet)…

Hi all,

Same problem here. After the update from 11.64 to 12.00, Opera does not launch any more on Ubuntu 10.04.

_When I run it with sudo rights, it runs without any issues_ but I do not want to run it as root.

Is this an Opera problem or an issue on my end?

It would be greatly appreciated if anyone could shed some light on this.

Cheers
Herbie

I've got the same problems too. I tried upgrading from Ubuntu Oneiric to Precise, but that didn't help. I posted a bug report 15 June, perhaps we'll hear something soon.

Did you manage to get Opera to load your profile? I tried using -personaldir, but it still uses a blank root profile.

Did you try a "profile reset"? Go into ~/.opera/ and delete the operaprefs.ini file (while Opera is closed). This will reset your configuration, but won't effect your bookmarks, mail, etc. If you had modified the toolbars, shortcuts or other setups you'll have to re-select them in Preferences > Menus and Preferences > Shortcuts, if you had a custom skin select it in Appearance.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it, but Opera is still not starting. Actually, I also tried renaming the entire .opera directory so that Opera starts from a new installation, but still the same "Could not initialize Opera" message. I guess the problem is earlier on in the initialization process.

Thanks to the Google I discovered that the problem might be caused by .kde directory wrong permissions (and that it's owned by root). Opera works fine after I changed .kde ownership from root to my user name (recursively).

The same thing happened to one of our internal users on upgrade. I was just about to tell you to check the permissions on ~/.kde but I see you guys have already worked it out for yourselves! wink

P.S. We recently fixed this in internal builds. Look out for a reference to DSK-366152 (Opera will not start if it does not have permission to read ~/.kde) in a future Opera Next (snapshot) changelog.

In my case, I renamed .opera to .opera.old, so Opera created its own .opera (see my first post in this thread). Still no luck.

I obviously searched for the wrong thing. Fortunately there are people around that does this better than me! smile

Thank you, it worked for me to after changing the .kde/ rights. I didn't even know that I had a .kde folder… bigsmile
I guess I need to cancel my bug report now, if I can find it…

It would have been nice if the error message was a little bit more specific, though.

When I take a closer look to that link, I realise that http://romanofskiat.wordpress.com/2012/06/18/could-not-initialize-opera/ didn't exist until today, so that COULD have been the reason that I didn't find anything. Except that I am not very good at this… bigsmile

Hi all,

Thanks a heap for the hint about the folder permissions. That did the trick for me!
