Dodd, can you make this into a separate web page and maintain it? Maybe put into the Opera Wiki so everyone can maintain it. Many of the "not available" items on your list are available in some form or other. A well maintained extension equivalency list would really help people who are trying to move from FF...

Hi,
as far as I know the "Block content" of Opera cannot block iframes and scripts. thats why when you block an ad in opera the space it would use in the page still exists and is simply blank. iframes, scripts and such still load, only the pictures dissapear.
So Ad Block for FF is better imho.

Hi Dodd

You seem to be the expert I need ------~~~~~~~!!!!!!

Just installed opera9 and have no clue how to import the bookmarks from firefox.
Would you know where they are hidden, in which file, under what name??

Any suggestion is very much appreciated

Kindly

aniccia, on Windows XP Firefox store bookmarks in file: c:\Documents and Settings\your_user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\some_letters.default\bookmarks.html . Notice that Application Data folder may be invisible until you check Show hidden files option in Folder Settings.
You should be able to import it with File>Import Export> Import Netscape/Firefox bookmarks... .

Excellent list there. I'd recommend separating out the "not available" items into a different list for ease of use (i.e. have one list of extensions you -can- do in opera, and one you can't).

I missed:
dom inspector (quick way to change some small forum reply box)
download status bar (it shows speed, %, time, and size; the out-of-the-box opera way isn't quite as useful)
foxyvoice (n/a to fx1.5 anymore; yes opera has voice but why not use windows sapi?)
menu editor (can probably be done with ini files, well would be better if there's a gui)
tab clicking option (the ability to middle click bar to undo close tab; also useful when I don't have usb mouse and need to use the touchpad)

Can the list be ordered alphabetically, and separate out the n/a ones as suggested? That would be of great help!

I think a very interesting page for this compare is the FirefoxOpera - blog

Getting Firefox to look, function and behave like Opera through various extensions and themes...

Although the blog doesn't seem to be updated any more it gives some impression about what Opera can do without extensions and some things Firefox still isn't able to do, even with extensions.

Suppose you are speaking of Progress bar while page loads (as transfer status is already with default setting showing more information).
Try to customise your toolbars (ie Tools-Appearance-Toolbar) and select "Pop-up-at-bottom" for the Progress bar. Out of the box Opera will compare with the even more powerful Firefox extension

You seem to know alot about FF extensions. I used the Cookie Culler in FF and was wondering if Opera 9 has a way to keep the cookies I want and delete the others on exit. Thanks

@tbird03: I know only some of the extensions and rarely use them. It's a pain in the ass to go through the lot of pages with maybe interesting extensions. And curiousity and interest is actually the reason why I looked for Firefox extensions at all. Opera fulfills my needs much better. There are only few extensions I use for webdesign-testing and webpage analysis parallel to the capabilities of Opera.

But I know a bit about how to use Google and I know something about Opera.
You can manage bookmarks in Opera (ie with Tools - Advanced - Cookies) and delete them one by one. It's not that slow, but of course it is not as comfortable as the description of Cookie Culler.

But I think you do not really want to manually delete cookies. This could be done easier with out of the box Opera9 and I don't know whether there is an Firefox extension at all to do it similar easy.
Just use the site specific preferences of Opera9:
1) the general setting for cookies is off or "delete at shutdown" (more webpages will work at once)
2) for those pages you permanently want to keep the cookies just right click on the page - Edit site preferences - Cookies - and take the setting you prefer

Thank you ResearchWizard I agree with you about having to go through all the pages to find an extension. I use Opera and am really happy with it. It works much faster for me. I am having problems with one site I visit but will make a new thread about that. I am figuring out how to use the edit site preference tool. I was just wanting to delete the cookies that I didn't want to keep when exiting Opera. Thanks again.

Thanks for your help. I was referring to the download statusbar extension that shows the transfer status of my downloads, not pages.
I like it because of its space-saving way of presenting status.

Yes the opera voice is far better than the default microsoft sam, but I got an even better one from my company, if only opera uses the windows sapi.
I was hoping that opera can be built with some platform-specific features...

Great list: Definetly something people looking to switch to or from Opera can make use of.

Videodownloader is something that lets you download streaming video content to your hard drive. Even though it doesn't always work its far from bloat if you constantly deal with streaming videos. [maybe you are a cspan junkie?]

Page thumbnails in Opera are completely and utterly useless compared to Firefox showcase to even suggest that its comparable is a joke. I would have switched tabs nearly two times over if Opera let me switch tabs on mouse over instead of generating a useless thumbnail for one page on mouse over. I think that this page thumbnails thing in Opera is the worst addition aside from the useless torrent client which is only eclipsed by the sheer worthlessness of widgets.

You can see showcase screens here http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=146351

There are better session manager implementations avialable for Firefox, Session saver can actually save text that you have typed into a field unlike Opera.

@shadow skill:
I never saw a session manager for Firefox that was able to start up properly with all opened tabs even when Firefox crashed. Maybe this is better meanwhile. In Opera this part just works (I have certain pages open for month without problems).

With the page thumbnails you describe you may be happy with tiled windows (right click on any tab, arrange->tile): the small pages/tabs (some may call them thumbnails) are fully functional.

I just discovered that only the not minimized tabs are tiled - so you can minimize all tabs, click on the tabs you want to see next to another and choose tile vertically or horizontally. cool To see all tabs you can maximise all before tiling. That is really great. Together with fit to width you can have just two tabs side by side (or as many you want) fully functional and fully visible in the width. And you can drag and drop text from one text-field into another. I love Opera surprising me smile

I've never found panelling to be useful unless I was coding, or required to do something that required that I synthesize information; and even then I've always felt that paneling functionality requires tab grouping in order to be truly effective. Personally I think thumbnailing works better for switching tabs when you have alot of them open. I admit its a fine line between the two types of functionality though.

Sessionsaver for Firefox works very well at properly restoring tabs on crashes. Although some themes seem to interfere with the tab name display its not much more than a cosmetic issue though I do admit its just a trifle annoying.

hey, thanks for this post! very informative.

i would just like to say that although, site preferences -> disable javascript is the same as Noscript 'addon' option in firefox.

it doesnt distinguis between the numerous third-party scripts that run on the main site through ads, nor can u see which third-party has its scripts running.

for example going on a site [eg yahoo], has the following options:
enable [site yahoo] javascript
enable [ad-site eg counter] javascript
enable [ad-site eg about blank] javascript
forbid [ad-site] javascript (if a specific javascript is already enabled)

this is not possible in O9's current site preferences, does anyone know a way to enable this or to go around this?
thank you.

@AustenN: You can go around this by examining the source for the URL of the script and use the Content Blocker.
I don't know about a tool to display the external JS-URLs.

Personally I just disable JS for the pages with JS ads. Until now I got no problems (usually I go there by link from another page, i.e. Google and don't have the need to navigate on the site, so I don't know whether there is a problem with navigation).

In Opera I personally would like to see features like FF-extension such as:
  • Flashblock (not via Opera's block content)
  • All-In One Search button (maybe Opera will implement UHB by default)
  • Launchy (it's less hassle than editing menu.ini to launch IE or FF for example)

Actually, I'm missing lots of things from CustomizeGoogle, like removing the text-ads from google sites (that's really the main thing I'm missing) and rewriting google image search so clicking on an image brings you straight to the image, instead of a google image search result frame.

I've seen a lot of talk at Digg about using the Firefox Styleish plugin to modify the layout of sites by writing your own CSS. To do this in Opera:

Design your custom stylesheet for the site and save it on your computer. Important - because Opera currently overrides the user stylsheet with the Author stylesheet, you need add !important to all your CSS calls to get it to override the default. (I hope they'll change this!!)

Back in the browser, right click and choose "Edit Site Preferences". From the display tab, enter the CSS file you just saved in the "My Style Sheet" field. Now, from the magnifying glass pop-down, use the mode drop-down to select "Manage Modes", make sure page stylesheet and user stylesheet are both selected under "Author Mode".

First of all, thanks for the frame bypassing script, it was just what I was looking for! Secondly, blocking http://*.googlesyndication.com/* unfortunately doesn't help much when you want to block the text-ads on Google's own pages. However, with some digging, and editing (because what I found didn't work), I worked out that adding
div#co div#rh, div#co div#rh {display: none !important;}
to a css file for gmail took care of the ads.

I still have to work out how to do it for the ads in the google search results, but I'm sure that won't be too hard either.

That looks great. You should add it to site preferences - display - my stylesheet [user-name].css for mail.google.com. If you put it in the general user.css you may run into problems displaying some pages - and do not necessarily know about it. (I suppose you already did it the right way).

You can simply drag the icon from the address field to the desktop. Yes, this means you have first to un-maximize the Opera application window.

Hmm the only thing I noticied is I like to download lots of attachments on this forum for pictures. When I use downthemall in Firefox it follows the PHP links automatically to the pics and downloads the pictures.

When I try the links panel in Opera it just downloads the PHP file. sad

Any way to fix this or make it work like downthemall does?

You may want to go into detail on how to used the site content feature and maybe something that can beat Filterset.G

Because adding everything in manually one by one can be rather long and not worth the time. As for Script blocking, is there a way to create a whitelist instead of a blacklist. Maybe there is a way to dump a list of blocked domains into a file that is in Opera. So that we don't have to block every ad ridden domain one by one and save some massive time.

One more Question, does the content block support regular expressions?

It's hugely incorrect to claim that Opera does "out of the box" the functions Tab Mix Plus extension does in Firefox. TMP is the one reason I haven't switched from Firefox to Opera: I simply cannot live without the functionality it offers.
