operapluginwrapper needs almost 100% CPU even after Opera is turned off

Hello,
Just upgraded to Opera 12.00 on Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric) and I find that my beloved fast and low-demanding browser (or more precise: operapluginwrapper) needs close to 100% CPU power and my netbook is almost melting.

Even when I switch Opera off, the process keeps on running on high CPU usage.

What is wrong? Any ideas? Need any more info?

Acer Aspire One 752 with 2 GB RAM. Oh, and I am currently working on LXDE desktop.

Thanks!

Felix

The only "idea" I have is to study, install and adjust some stuff like and (auto nice daemon), cpulimit and cpufreqd, and set it up so that it would "underclock" the CPU for a while as it approaches high temperatures, or even put specific bad-behaving CPU hogs on a leash, limiting how much CPU they can take.

And or sometimes you could kill just the pluggin wrapper as well, or even have opera wrapped in a bash script that would kill the plugin wrapper after opera itself has been closed.

Something more objective than that would probably be a job for the programmers of opera and the plug-ins. Adobe apparently gave up with linux and flash already, so it's better to try not to depend much on that.

Hello the-dsc,
thanks for the answer. Think most of those are beyond my skills, but I actually think it is a bug of the new Opera (I cannot believe a browser which advertises as lightweight and resource-saving deliberately takes over 50 - 100% of the CPU, even if it is just a netbook.

The temperature thing is not actually so dramatic (I exaggerated a little to make the point...)
Unlike with other poeople, killing the process after shutting down the browser did not give any problems, so I might stick to tghat and see if the Opera programmers come up with a solution.

Do you still see operapluginwrapper running after waiting for a while (more than 30 seconds) after exiting Opera? It should commit suicide at that stage.

When operapluginwrapper uses 100% CPU, it isn't Opera that is using your resources. It's the plugin that it is wrapping.

I downgraded from version 12 to 11.64. Opera plugin wrapper is no where to be found when I open a youtube video, and cpu was cut DRASTICALLY.

opera_plugin_wrapper cause serious problem of usage of CPU!

This is really a stupid design!

I have the similar problem after upgrade.

Please remove it!!!

Stupid plugin! You should give the user a choice to remove it! I cannot find such option.

And who are you yelling at? This is a user forum. Sometimes one of the developers (especially Ruario) will look in, but even for him not all that often ...

Without some sort of a plugin wrapper, Opera couldn't use plugins. If you want to just go ahead and disable plugins Opera will work that way, though most video and music involves plugins.

To the red letter spam person: if you have a particular plugin you would like to disable, that can be done from the opera:plugins page. Opera also has an on-demand plugin option that you can enable from Preferences -> Advanced -> Content (and which you can disable per site) in case you only want to run plugins when you click on them.

Cross-posting as you've done with this post is not appreciated. And by doing it, you ended up on the wrong forum. You are on Windows, and we are talking about Linux, where the situation is very different.

Let's go back to helping FelixFranke please smile.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the comments. It actually sorted itself out, using a lot less CPU now. Maybe it really was the plugin like AVG suggested.
God knows which, but I don't seem to have used it again.
It did actually rum on 60+% more than 30 seconds after closing Opera, that is why I posted...

It now runs very well, but I am still not impressed with the lack of interesting themes (this was better in the 11.XX versions), but that's another topic.

Regarding the troll: Sorry about that. Kind of destroys the good vibes here...cool
