Opera 12 does pop up a notification when a new message arrives. You can turn it off/on in "Ctrl + F12 -> advanced -> notifications". Opera also shows an envelop in the taskbar button/systray when there are new messages. Opera also lights up the envelope in the the panel list.

In the properties for each account, you can set up a sound notification too.

There's also a Show Notification For No New Messages for when you manually check for new messages and they aren't any.

Opera doesn't have any options to specify how long the notification stays up or how long after a message arrives before the notification pops up. If you want those things, you can wish for them in the wish-list forum.

My received email pop up notification stopped working two days ago. The notification boxes are checked in preferences for both new mail and no new mail. Neither work. It still plays my message arrived sound though. Everything else seems to work. One day it was working and the next day it wasn't. I changed some sorting and display options of the received message list but I do not know if this coincided with the problem. Any ideas?

Are you using POP or IMAP? Sounds like you're using the former, but you didn't say.

I have several accounts set up. Two are imap and one is pop. None of them are functioning.

You can close down Opera and rename operaprefs.ini in the preferences folder. When Opera starts back up, it'll create a new one and you can see if that helps. If it doesn't, you can put your old one back.

You can make a standalone installation to a folder on your desktop and setup the IMAP account in it to see if it works there. If it doesn't even work there, I'd look at external causes.

Are you using the default "Opera Standard" skin?

For Windows XP, are you using the standard winxp theme or are you using the classic theme?

I will give your suggestion a try tomorrow. There is one thing that might have some connection. I installed an extension called "Film reviews" which failed to work and did not install an extension button. The problem might have coincided with that. I uninstalled the extension. Here is the extension description:

I renamed the operprefs.ini file and the popups returned! I haven't a clue where the error is in the prefs file. It looks normal to me. There is only one copy of these in the file:

Show Notification For New Messages=1
Show Notification For No New Messages=1

It might be something under the "[Windows]" section in the file. Or, it might be a bug where:

Show Notification For New Messages=1
Show Notification For No New Messages=1

are present in the file. You can remove them from the file and Opera will use the default of 1. I think they'll only be shown in the file if you had messed with those settings in the UI at some point.

I think the Show Notification entries only appeared after I started playing with the settings because the problem had already occurred. I already tried removing them because I saw they were not present in the new prefs file. Removing them had no effect.

The [Windows] section of the file is quite massive and I wouldn't know where to begin with it. The entire prefs file is 10K. If anybody at Opera wants to explore my prefs file, I would be glad to send it to you. I know I never messed with it directly so there must be a bug somewhere in Opera. It must have created the problem on its own.

Do you actually need your old operaprefs.ini? If not, I wouldn't worry about it and would just keep using the new one and recustomize any settings you need to.

I don't feel like looking at it atm. But, you can send it to my email address if you want and I might look at it some time.

You could just change the "[Windows]" section in the old file to what it is in the new file to see if that fixes it. That'd at least tell you if it's the "[Windows]" section or not.

The problem was actually in the User Prefs section, but I don't know where. I just deleted the entire user prefs section and the notifier came back.
