Opera 9 Buttons

Since some things have changed for Opera 9.x, We need another new Button thread. This is the old thread

This is the Opera Custom Button Maker. There are loads of custom buttons on the Wiki Site, and this is my button page which has a few more, a customized standard skin with extra icons, and explains a bit about making buttons. Tomu's page has some buttons for Opera 9.

If you have any great ideas for new buttons, post them in this thread using the {Opbut=Action, parameter 1, parameter 2, "Tooltip", "Icon"}Text{/opbut} code.¹

If you need help making buttons, post your requests here.
Please don't PM me — though I enjoy helping people, I prefer to do it only when I want to.

¹ Replace {curly brackets} with [square ones]. Parameters are optional, not all actions need them. Titles and icons are also optional. See the [Images] section of skin.ini for your skin to see the right name to use for the icon you wish to use.

To edit buttons posted here, quote the post, edit the code, and preview your post. Then drag the link to a toolbar or click it to add the button to your "My Buttons" custimize toolbar palette.

Opera supports the Netscape plugin API and so does Firefox. By default installation the Firefox plugin path is added to the Opera plugin paths (if Firefox is installed).

Pesala,

Here is the link to both of the IE View programs:

http://operawiki.info/CustomButtons

Both are listed under 'Web Development' buttons. Am I on the right track? If so, which of the two should I choose?

I'm still in the dark as to where the 'My Button' palette is located. Can you point me there please?

Thank you for your help to date. I do appreciate your input.

Merv,
I wouldn't advise to use "View in IE" inside Opera with the Neptune-plugin (I don't even know, whether this still works).
"Open in IE" is much more common. When you press this button the current URL is opened in the installed Internet Explorer.

You can access your buttons (your button palette) by right click on any toolbar and "customize" or by Menu - Tools - Appearance or by shortcut Shift+F12
inside the tab "Buttons"
in the category "My buttons"

Hello Christian,

Thanks for the lead. Located in My Buttons is the text 'InIE' which I assume is the same as 'Open in IE' that you refer to. When I drag this to the toolbar, the text appears momentarily then disappears when the toolbar reopens. And there is no image of any button neither adjacent to the text 'InIE' in the My Buttons window nor is it created when I drag the 'InIE' text to the toolbar. How do I create a button image to use with this plugin?

Hello Merv,
the icons are delivered with the skins, a lot of them deliver the IE and FF/Fx buttons.

You can load and change skins by right click on any toolbar and "customize" OR by Menu - Tools - Appearance OR by shortcut Shift+F12
inside the tab "Skins"

To select a new skin you can just go to http://my.opera.com/community/customize/skins/ (at least for me this delivers better access to the skins and skin information)

If you have the button on your toolbar you see the icon in the preview if there is any.

A button to open yahoo bookmarks? Like the "new tab" button that sits in the tab bar? Would so apreciate it if someone could make it.

The reason for this. I find a webpage I wish to bookmark while useing opera. Be nice to stay on that web page. Hit a button, and in a new tab yahoo bookmarks would open. That way I can ad the webpage to my yahoo bookmarks.

Also in the profile menue where are my custom buttons located? Thank you so much in advance.

Just visit your Yahoo Bookmarks page and drag the page tab to your personal toolbar, or any other toolbar. On the Bookmarks panel toolbar is convenient too if you have space there and don't normally display the personal bar.

I want to be able to click on a link, while the new link is opening in a new tab I stay on web page I clicked on the link to open.

You might like the open tab in background. Just click on the link with mouse middle button or click with left button while holding cntr+shft.

Help, please. I am trying to add the icon and function for Copy, Paste, Delete.
I do a lot of these three activities. When using Firefox, I was able to add the icon(function) to the toolbar without any problems.

See my last three posts. I followed the Create Button instructions as far as I can tell.

They all say Show popup menu, "Browser Menu Bar", he never assigned the desired action to them. But note, they won't work (other than copy) in a web page - it's been tried before. If you wanted to add those to your Compose window, they should work there.

Hello all,

I would like to make a button to assign a specified mail filter to some emails.

I have some filters called "perso", "truck", "pinball" and so on and I think it'd be useful to be able to higlight some emails in the unread section and click the button to automatically assign these mails to this filter AND mark them as read so they disappear from the unread wiev.

Many thanks for the help

You'd need to look in you index.ini file to determine the ID assigned to those filters, otherwise it should be possible.

Hello

The indexes I'd like to assign to buttons are

34
36
37
39
67

Additionally I'd like to change the name of index 4 from "Boite d'envoi" to "Envoi" and when I save the index.ini file with opera closed of course and reopen opera the name stays as it is and when I open the index.ini file the name has been changed back to "Boite d'envoi", is this index name not changeable ?

Many thanks

Built-in views, you'd need to modify the langauge file. We've had this same issue before with labels, if you try to edit index.ini to change the names of the labels it doesn't work. But if you change the names in the language file, then it works fine.

I thought there was a move message command, but I'm not seeing one. Looks like the best I could do is to display the folder menu, same as the "Show in >" item on the popup menu - you'd then need to click on the appropriate view yourself (so two clicks, instead of one).

Does anyone know where buttons are "saved" to? I've searched around the forums and in the Opera directories on my computer, but I can't find it. I have some buttons on different builds that I want on others and I can't find them online. I'm looking for a way to migrate them. Anyone know what to do?

They are in your custom toolbar.ini.

Ok, thanks, did the language file and index.ini files and it works great.

About the move button is it possible to make a button that would pop up the list of filters I want ?

A sort of filtered drop down list containing the filters I want to use, a bit like the "check mail" button that displays all the accounts...

Thanks

A note about editing your language file (i.e. english.lng): When you upgrade Opera this file is overwritten, if you want to keep your changes save a copy of the modified file.

The only option I have available on the menu is the full menu - all your personal filters. Sorry, don't see a way to limit it to only select ones.

The button would look like this... button

Click on it, then open a mail window and drag it from Customize > Buttons > My buttons to your toolbar. Sorry, couldn't think of a good icon to use ...

Thanks for the efforts, but when I use it it's exactly the same as the "display in" standard opera button, isn't it ?

the translation is hazardous, in the french file it is "afficher dans" which brings the same menu...

You're sure it's not possible to make individual buttons to assign the selected mails to the filter representing the button ? That could be a great addon for future versions...

No reason it shouldn't be the same "Execute program" command used in both Windows and UNIX. What's the actual program, and are there any parameters that you need to pass it (a specific file to open, etc.)?

12. December 2006, 14:52:37

Well, basically it's an Automator workflow. It gets an URL (a simple manual copy-paste, no parameters to pass) and then it downloads all the images linked on the page.
The issue i found, is that the button makers for Opera don't use a path. This is in ~/Documents/stuff/application.app to begin with. Then, to help having simple things, Mac programs are self contained... the .app is actually a folder, when clicked there is some sort of linking to the main executable inside (./Contents/MacOS/AppName) BUT if you start something like that, it opens a bash window too. Probably useful in debugging.... not nice to have for a program that should run in background.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GRYXH9RC
There. Uncompressed under windows, it gives 2 folders and a file. __MACOSX folder should be hidden, and it seems to contain space for a custom icon. Then a ._4ChanDownloader.app file (should be hidden too) that is... who knows what, and finally the 4ChanDownloader.app folder itself. That was just to explain what pops out of the zip smile

Opera can use paths, I'm sure, if you provide them. Provided the program is somewhere on your path you could also use the name without a path. I gather that if it uses the clipboard you'd like to combine the "Execute program" command with a "Copy link" first, such as

Copy link & Execute program, "4ChanDownloader"

That's for the part after the "=" if used in the [Link Popup Menu] and [Image Link Popup Menu] sections of a custom menu setup. Of course you could also copy the link yourself and then use a button, which I presume is what you were trying to do.

13. December 2006, 15:34:43

Execute program,"/Users/alexthestampede/Documents/stuff/4ChanDownloader.app",,"4ChanDownloader","Label Funny"

Dosen't work :-|

Execute program,"/Users/alexthestampede/Documents/stuff/4ChanDownloader.app/Contents/MacOS/4ChanDownloader",,"4ChanDownloader","Label Funny"

Neither...

Execute program,"~/Documents/stuff/4ChanDownloader.app/Contents/MacOS/4ChanDownloader",,"4ChanDownloader","Label Funny"

And using the ~ as in "Home" dosen't work, too.

Those experiments have been done with the button generator at nontroppo's.... any ideas? :-\

This is most definitely an Opera 9 button, it uses a feature that was new in 9 and hence won't work in prior versions.

I've seen a bookmarklet (patience, I am asking about a button below) that appended ?style=mine to the current URL and re-loaded the page, thus displaying LiveJournal pages in a prefered style. This was useful enough that I thought it would make a good button and I've been trying for a while now to make it work. I almost succeed. I can get a button that does what I desire, but it disappears when Opera is closed. When I re-open Opera, the button is gone from the address bar. The tab bar doesn't keep hold of it either, and it disappears from the 'My buttons' customization menu. I have tried to save the session with the button, to no effect. Other buttons, written by other people, are nicely permanent.

Here is what I have fed into the Button Generator:

Go to page,"javascript:location.search+=(location.search?'&':'?')+'style=mine'"

Am I missing something? I've read this thread, the one before it, and several of the sites linked in these threads and still feel like I'm missing the manual about this. Is the javascript the problem? Is it something that just won't work in a proper "power button"? I'd really rather not have to enable the 'personal bar' as a good button elsewhere take up so much less space.

Also, I have seen references to a button.ini or custom.ini that I do not find when I look. I am using Opera 9.01 (I've not been able to download 9.10 yet) on Fedora Core. Where are the custom button definitions stored on a Linux install?

Thank you for your time.

Are you closing Opera properly? Did you install Opera 9 over an older version? Is your toolbar setup file locked?

Opera doesn't save all changes until you close it, if you are leaving Opera open when you shutdown the system or otherwise logout then your button wasn't saved.

If you installed 9.x directly over 8.x, then your toolbar setup may not be compatible. You may need to go to Preferences > Advanced > Toolbars, select the default toolbar setup, then recustomize your toolbars.

If Opera doesn't have permission to modify your toolbar setup, then of course it can't save any changes.

Though actually, a fourth possibility occurs to me - Opera may be having problems parsing your button code. You might try escaping particularly the & character (replace it with %26) and see if that helps.

Note that the code you posted appears wrong anyway, I'll presume its just a typo but it should probably read ...location.search('?')... at the very least. I'm sure there's more to it, but I rarely use javascript myself.

At first I was closing Opera by using the [X] button in the corner, but switched to using File | Exit after a bit of paranoia that that might have been it. It wasn't.

I'm not sure anymore, but I think this was a clean install without 8.xx on the system. Just in case I'm wrong about that, I did try as you said and, alas, get the same results.

Opera does have permission to make the changes. I've added other buttons without issue, so I know it can be done successfully.

Escaping the ampersand had no effect, but at least didn't break anything. Making the javascript change (I admit to copying the bookmarklet code - I don't speak javascript) resulted in a button that didn't work at all. The original script works, the button just disappears with the session. Since other buttons do not, I figured I was missing something or trying something that was known not to be workable, such as trying to put the javascript in a button command.

Might there be a way to accomplish this without javascript?
