This is a known problem on *nix that Yahoo has never fixed. See these threads:
Opera for *nix: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=1208882
Open the Web: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=1133642

Yahoo fixed it for Windows but not for *nix. Your options are to either mask as Firefox or IE or use this link which is at the bottom of the mobile page: http://www.yahoo.com/?m=1
Firefox 17.0, Opera 10.11-4791; Platform: SunOS (OpenIndiana); System: i86pc  Opera Desktop Team Security @ Opera Sitepatching blog
Linux in VirtualBox | Opera 12.11-1661

In other words ... since the Android version of Opera Mobile can identify itself as Opera for Linux (and possibly other versions of Opera Mobile can as well), Yahoo has decided that all Opera clients identifying as using Linux must actually be mobile clients. Stupid, they could just check the architecture (very few phones would use x86 architecture) - but someone who has set Opera Mobile to identify as a desktop version probably doesn't want to see the mobile page anyway. So they are chasing away the very people they are trying to cater to.

I do have Opera Mobile on an Android tablet, I have checked the user agent string. I wouldn't say it is good to know though ... while it provides some insight to their probable motive, it doesn't help solve the problem.

It's always possible to detect the mobile version of Opera correctly: http://my.opera.com/community/openweb/idopera/. So up to Yahoo to fix this, unfortunately.

I solved this on pclinuxos.
This is solution !
You insert this address in Opera: http://it.yahoo.com/?m=1
Yahoo become in desktop version bigsmile
Byeeee !
Francesco bat

PS The address is in italian version. You substitute "it" with your local region.

Hi!,

The solution for this Issue is only going to the extreme bottom of the "Mobile" version homepage, then must always be there the looking selection, for Mobile or normal Web selection, once you "click" the normal selection you will then always get into the normal Yahoo homepage.

Best Regards!

mclfabian, that is correct-- UNTIL Yahoo decides to log you out! Then it is back to the mobile. Since My Yahoo is my homepage, I set my homepage as:

http://my.yahoo.com/?m=1

and it stays in desktop mode through multiple sign-outs! (grazie, francescobat!)

Yahoo has fixed some of their country sites after we pointed out the issue to them, e.g. http://no.yahoo.com/ (Norway) does not redirect to the mobile version. However, it seems they did not fix everything. As of right now I get redirected to a mobile site for Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Germany, Spain, France, Indonesia, Ireland, India, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Philippines, Singapore, United Kingdom, United States, Venezuela, Vietnam, Yemen and South Africa. We'll drop them a line and let them know they have a little more work to do! wink
