User status in chat/irc...
Hi all,I searched the help and I searched this forum, but can't find anything on it...
How can I see a user status in the chat? I know, and also saw in the help you can type /away to set your status to away for example. problem is, that you don't see that in the user list?!
When I type it again I get a confirmation in the chat box that my status is not "away" anymore. Why can't I see the status in Opera? What's the use of the commands otherwise? It's not just my own status...I can't see any status on anybody else either.
Somebody can help? I'd rather not change to mIRC or something, because I like the chat in Opera...except for the status problem
P.S Using Opera v9 build 8501, on win2k SP4

Opera will only show the away status of people in your contacts list. Try adding some nicks to your contacts, their status will then show up in channels' nick lists as well as in the chat panel.
You can also use the Chat pulldown menu or right click in the chat panel to set your own status. If you want a visual indication of whether your'e away or not, add your own nick to your contacts.

mmm, that's annoying. Then I have to add a lot of people to my contacts just to see their status?! By the way, if I add myself and change my status to away, I still don't see my status behind my name...?

Yes, or you can /whois someone if you want to know if they're away or not. Sending them a private message will also tell you if they're away.

Are you sure you're actually set as away? /whois yourself to find out. FYI, just typing "/away" will always set you as not away. You must provide a reason. "/away afk" for example.
See here for some common IRC commands: http://webtoman.com/opera/panel/IRC_commands.php

yes I'm sure. I set the away command with the reason why I'm away. Another thing; if I set away and "not away" with the / commands, then the status in the panel or the menubar doesn't follow :S
So if I set status to "Away" with /away [reason], then the status in the panel is still "Online". If I do a whois on myself, it does say "Away". Also it's a lot of work to do a whois on everybody to see their status. It should be visible in the userlist.

This could probably be handled better. It would indeed be good if the UI reflected changes to your status that were done with /away commands. You could try filing a bug report.
You can still add yourself to your contacts to see your own status, of course. And yes, ideally Opera would show the away state of everyone in a channel. It could be done, though last time I checked, mIRC did not do this either (correct me if I'm wrong
). You could try posting on the wishlist forum, though the IRC client doesn't seem to get much attention unfortunately.
