[12.xx] Shortcuts disabled, Panel button grayed out...
So, this is a problem I had with the latest few 12.50 snapshots, and I assumed it was an obscure bug due to my setup, so I just installed a portable copy of 12.01 next to it so I could keep working correctly. Fact is, I just had the same issue happen to me with that version, so here I am....My setup: Windows 7 x64, GeForce 570, 8GB Ram, SSD & co... Nice high-end rig from last year.
My Opera setups:
- Latest 12.50 snapshot, 32bit, around 270 tabs, uses my 'historical' bookmark, password and session files. Quite a lot of extensions, too. Panel is opened, and always to the Windows panel (click the + button and select Windows). Keyboard shortcuts are running in "9.2 Emulation mode", which is my preferred one because I can use the numpad to easily navigate tabs. Problem happens both in hardware accelerated mode and normal mode. (I used to think it was due to the HW mode which I always had enabled.)
- Portable 12.01 64bit installed in a lambda folder, around 45 tabs, it's a clean install with very little changes (even the Opera menu is still that silly button.) Windows Panel is opened, too. Never enabled HW acceleration on this copy. Keyboard shortcuts are in 9.2 Emulation mode, too. The following extensions are installed: "AutoStack", "No Dupes", "Tab Grouper", and "Tab counter". They're all also used in my 12.50 snapshot (in addition to more, which I won't list because they're probably not involved.) "Tab counter" is a very simple extension so it's unlikely it's involved either. I haven't looked into the source code of the other three.
So, after a certain time of running Opera (can be about an hour, sometime a day, more rarely more), something triggers internally that completely breaks it.
- The Panels icon in the status bar is grayed out. I can no longer click it. Pressing F4 (shortcut to open and close panels) doesn't work either. This is actually my 'trick' to know when the bug is happening. If there's an oddity showing up, I immediately have a look at the bottom left icon to see if it's greyed out or not. It usually is...
- Clicking the Opera button in 12.01 gives me feedback (i.e. the click inset/outset animation, whatever), but doesn't actually happen the menu. I can open it by then pressing the Alt key. I don't have the problem in 12.50 where my menu is the full menu bar.
- Numpad shortcuts '1' and '2' ("previous" and "next" tabs) are disabled. Oddly, though, shortcut '4' ("minimize" tab) works.
- Other shortcuts, like Ctrl+T (new tab), History, New Window, Downloads, etc, are also disabled.
- Can no longer access menu item entries. Clicking them has no effect. Generic Opera pages are still callable but only from their "opera:" shortcuts in the URL. Since Extensions have no shortcut that I know of, I can't access them at all.
- I can right-click pages, and AFAIK all options in the context menu still work.
- I can right-click extension icons, and even click Preferences and Customize and things like that -- what doesn't work is the 'Manage Extensions' menu item.
There are probably many other oddities caused by that bug, but this is all I could gather for now. I would assume that because it only happens after a while, it's a memory leak or something, but don't forget that I have 8 GB of Ram, and running my 270 tabs on a 32bit version to ensure it doesn't use all the available memory (in 32bit it'll only use about 3.5GB like a 32bit Windows would allocate, while in 64bit it uses up to 7GB.)
Can anyone confirm this ever happening to them..? Never had this before the v12 line. But then again, I seem to constantly get new funny and original bugs every time a new major version of Opera is out, and other people can't seem to reproduce them, and they get fixed at some point without any mentions in the changelog, so maybe I'm just that way. I catch weird Opera bugs. This one forces me to restart Opera though, and it's not cool, especially with 270 tabs that tend to crash my Opera at restart even though it now has that cool 'slow loading' feature... (And I have my cache set to never expire and never test for updates. But that's for another story...)
I'm on an e8400, Windows 64bit, so really shouldn't have thought SSE would be an issue.
Have this exact problem. It's the most annoying thing ever, renders opera barely usable. For example, I'm currently downloading a 6gb file and I have no way to track it's progress because I can't open the Downloads tab, and the shortcut isnt working. The "Opera" button ceases to function, my panels button is greyed out as described. Getting identical symptoms.
Massively frustrating bug, and i have no idea what causes it. I've just switched to Opera after trying IE9, Firefox and Chrome but not finding any of them optimal. I've had it ever since I installed on this system. Note, this isn't a beta build or anything like that, i downloaded it from the main page.

I'd been using AutoStack on my previous install, so it may be the culprit indeed. Haven't used it in my current install and never got the bug to happen, but then again I had other crashes that made Opera unusable to me these days. The current RC seems to be working fine, so I'll be re-enabling AutoStack and see if it is indeed the cause of my troubles.
