Right-click on the message and choose "view all headers and message".
In the source, find the section for the excel attachment and see what the type is in its content-type header. It should be "application/vnd.ms-excel". If it's anything else like "application/msword", then the problem is with the message itself.
If the type is correct, goto "ctrl + F12 -> advanced -> downloads -> uncheck "hide file types opened with Opera" -> select "application/vnd.ms.excel" -> click "edit" and set it to "show download dialog".
Then, when you choose "open" in the download dialog or choose "open" after left-clicking on an xls attachment in a message, the xls file should open in the default program for xls files. So, make sure Excel is associated with xls files.
If all else fails, click the attachment and choose to save it to your desktop (instead of choosing "open") and then open it from your desktop.
Also, instead of "show download dialog" in the type' settings, you can set it to "open with default application" if you want it to automatically open in the default application when you navigate to an xls file. Should work for attachments too.
