How to post about problems with specific sites

If you are having problems with one or more websites in Opera (display errors, site features not working, etc.), you may be able to get help by posting about it in this forum (the browser forum).

Note: Before you post, please search the forums for existing threads discussing those sites, and see if any of them apply to you. If your post is not about a specific problem with a specific site, you should use the existing thread for general discussion about site compatibility.

When posting, please follow these simple rules:

  1. As a rule of thumb, use separate threads for different sites. Listing several sites in one single thread can get confusing, and makes it more difficult for others to search for information
  2. Use a brief but descriptive title for new threads, such as "menus at example.com not working"
  3. Remember to include the name or at least the domain name ("example.com") of the site in the subject line (Note: not the complete URL, just the actual domain name)
  4. Give an URL to the specific page you are having problems with, if possible
  5. Give step by step instructions on how the problem can be reproduced
  6. Try to keep it brief (yet descriptive), and avoid bringing up things that are not directly related to the actual problem(s) you are having

FAQ

Q: Why do sites sometimes break in Opera?
A: There can be many reasons for site compatibility problems. The site could be detecting which browser you are using and sends specific content to each browser. If it leaves out Opera, it will not serve any useful content to Opera users, and the site will break. Some sites will specifically check for Opera users and prevent them from accessing certain things on the site. It could also be a case of Opera handling something differently from other browsers, or simply a bug in Opera which needs to be fixed for the site to work.

Q: Does Opera only follow standards?
A: The goal for Opera has always been to lead the way in standards compliance. However, this does not mean that Opera refuses to open sites that do not follow standards. Opera has been built from the ground up with compatibility with the real Web in mind, and site compatibility issues are dealt with all the time. Opera even has a special compatibility mode which is used to handle sites that are not standards-compliant.

Q: What is Opera doing to deal with this problem?
A: Opera Software is doing a lot of different things to handle compatibility issues. There is constant work going on to fix bugs and generally improve compatibility. At the same time, we have people dedicated to contacting sites to convince them to support Opera, and we can often tell them exactly what they need to do to fix their site in Opera. It is often simply a matter of removing the code that blocks Opera on their site. If this fails, we can fix sites by using "JavaScript patches" that are downloaded automatically and fix certain issues. We also encourage users to contact sites if they discover compatibility issues.

Note that sites are sometimes a constantly moving charges, with changes going on all the time. This makes it even more difficult to stay up to date, as "patches" or earlier fixes may no longer work.

On www.chase.com, where I have a credit card account, I cannot view my statements in Opera. They are pdf files that open in a new tab. In opera a new tab opens, loads, but remains blank.

In firefox the bill opens in a new tab using adobe's pdf viewer (just the same way most pdfs open for me inside Opera).

On www.wachovia.com, where I have a checking account, it allows users to click on a check shown in the account summary to view a scanned copy of the check. This feature does not work for me in Opera on Windows (haven't tried in Linux).

I'm sure the Opera Desktop team already relizes, but www.googlepages.com--google's web page creator--does not work in Opera.

If I force my way past Google's warning that the site doesn't work in my browser (spoof or tell google not to check the browser type) you can see the web editing program, but it doesn't work at all.

mail.yahoo.com does not work in Opera for Windows--the old version works but the new version doesn't.

It works fine in Opera for Linux.
