You could always try and email Google asking them the same question.

In my opinion, quick contacts is still not reliable in Opera 9 and, if I worked in Google, I would not release quick contacts to Opera 9 with default settings. But I like testing, so, I always mask as Mozilla. I hope all will work OK soon.it works just fine, so it deliberatly disables that feature if it detects opera. Why??

Opera have proved that their browser is capable of supporting such functionality, now its up to Google to prove that they want everyone able to use their products.
Simply masking as Mozilla doesn't work because, although it gets you around the browser blocks, it sets up Gmail to use some Mozilla specific functions (that Opera has entirely serviceable alternatives for) not available in Opera.

Without masking, everything goes fine, as it should be — without quick contacts. Masking as Mozilla, the quick contacts tab is enabled and works, but there are still problems. I feel this is the reason why Google hasn't still released the quick contacts for Opera with default settings.get the quick contacts tab, unless I fool mail.google.com and "mask as mozilla".

Incidentally, the current downloadable site specific preferences set the defaults for gmail.com, gmail.google.com and mail.google.com to identifying as Opera, meaning that unless you set your own site specific preferences for those Opera will always identify as itself regardless of the global setting. This is because the patches only worked when identified as Opera.

"Current browser.js status: Browser.js is enabled! The active browser.js file is edited: October 12th 2006, version: Opera 9.x"
Does it mean my browser.js is outdated? How could I update my browser.js, since my proxy requires authentication, and
Opera 9.02 (latest stable release)If you use a proxy server that requires user name and password to access the internet, please note that Opera will not request user name and password for an authenticating proxy in order to download ua.ini and browser.js. Site patching or upgrade notification will not take place if such proxies are required.

Opera doesn't ship with a browser.js file, so clearly at some point you've successfully got one. I think what that paragraph is actually saying is that if you have not already authenticated yourself with your proxy at some time during your browsing session Opera will not prompt you for a username and password if it becomes time to update browser.js.
You can make sure you have the latest version by choosing the Help menu-->Check for updates... item.

I have seen that there is a new browser.js since November 20. It is updated here. So I tried Gmail without site preferences (that means identifying as Opera). Still no quick contacts. But this may be because I use Gmail user interface in Portuguese. Someone could try the English interface to see if quick contacts work. It's just me or it's working now???

- Removing mail.google.com site's preferences...
- and removing mail.google.com cookies...
- and calling http://mail.google.com/mail/ ...
the page redirects to a huge URL and quick contacts ARE THERE!
But calling again http://mail.google.com/mail/ quick contacts ARE GONE.
(You know, now I'm identifying as Opera, of course.)
It is worth some more testing...

That explains why I was getting quick contacts after a clean install... I purged configuration files for Opera 9.02 debian package and deleted the ~/.opera folder, so no settings or cookies were preserved, and the first time I went to gmail I got quick contacts and now (maybe the 2nd time I went to that page) they were gone...
