hmm... interesting... I like Opera and I like Yahoo, so I guess you can't go wrong!...
Monday, 8. January 2007, 19:08:21
Good work OM Team...

Indeed OM is the *Boss*... a deal with Yahoo, and not Google... is OK... and probably better for users, on small screens...
Exciting news....
Monday, 8. January 2007, 22:37:49
Well, I like Opera, but I hate Yahoo with a passion that I can't quite find the words to describe. But that probably stems from the fact that 9 times out of 10 they've never found anything I've looked for.
To say that I'm displeased with this development is an understatement. I'm keeping the Google search version on my Treo.
Tuesday, 9. January 2007, 01:56:14
Don't like this news, not at all, google is so advanced and fresh, WHY?!
Tuesday, 9. January 2007, 02:09:10
Yeah its a mixed basket lol, I never used yahoo search so I hope it doesn't falter in comparison to the google search Opera's using now. It'd be safer to include google in that secondary search bar IMHO but anyway I welcome this if its for the better of Opera Mini

Google has the better search. Yahoo has the better "other stuff" (like movie listings). Although Google has the better maps, they don't work on my phone or PDA.
Whatever Opera Mini changes the search on the Start Page to to make money is fine by me. If it's not Google I'll just go straight to my Google bookmark every time.
Yahoo Go looks cool, but for Motorola they only support RAZR V3x. Not mine. Oh well.
Tuesday, 9. January 2007, 07:35:53
This new "Y! on the GO" thing... I know it's launch is tied in with this deal with OM... but it's not a mobile browser like OM right?... do they compliment eachother or something?... how come it only works on the v3xx?... what's so great about it anyway?... I'm sure OM is 10 times better anyways...
Tuesday, 9. January 2007, 08:12:15
I agree with sremick, for me Yahoo is a no no so will just have Google as a bookmark and use that instead, 'tis a shame to ruin OM like this but market forces and all that..........if only Yahoo was as good as Google.....but it isn't and as for the Yahoo extras...........sorry not interested

Bad news for me. I like Google, and the change of Opera Software partners won't change my preferences, therefore I am forced to open one more page (the google's) per search. So I hope Google search will still be available as extra search engine like Wikipedia.

Does anyone have the Yahoo! Go jar? they don't offer it to download and try it for any phone.

Some more info on the Opera and Yahoo! partnership:
Both Opera and Yahoo! have been working hard towards improving the user experience on mobile phones. Yahoo! has been very serious about its mobile strategy for several years, making them a natural partner for Opera. Meanwhile, Opera has built up a huge user base and a deep knowledge of the mobile Web. The companies will work together to develop Web-based content and services for mobile phones.

Still not convinced, sorry but seen the hash they have made here in the uk with bt broadband
Tuesday, 9. January 2007, 19:20:44
Fine by me, as long as it's still FREE! I think we should all be thankful for that.
ps: i hope this doesnt affect wikipedia search on start page
Tuesday, 9. January 2007, 22:04:59
yeah we can't really complain... anyways you can still bookmark google.com and put it on your startpage... I myself don't use search engines that often anyways... but it sounds like Yahoo is revamping theirs so we should give it a chance...
Tuesday, 9. January 2007, 23:30:29
Hmm... if everyone makes a deal with Google, then Google becomes... *King*... and the others... *obedient servants* ... Meaning the end of innovation... (like, IE before competition)
The Yahoo deal gives hope to future evolution... Users should be happy about it... ???... I know I'm...
Tuesday, 9. January 2007, 23:51:10
Notwithstanding the fact that OS replaced Google search on startpage on Yahoo! in the Opera Mini browser (later, as i know, for Opera Mobile too) not cogent argument for me and many other users go to the yahoo services. Yahoo is a leader in certain countries, Google same are international.
But Opera position clearly : If the product is available free of charge for end user, the producer to get a profit from 3rd company (if profit more, that of course is better). So, Yahoo "to make a proposal for which not refuse".
P.S. I simply add a bookmark to Google search on the homepage, and for me unimportant who is sponsoring the project, most important thing is that it remains free.
Wednesday, 10. January 2007, 05:44:33
I prefer google thus i have it bookmarked. The bookmark that came with OM works great. Yahoo doesnt work on my phone at all and i have never found what I was searching for with yahoo.
Wednesday, 10. January 2007, 08:29:11
that is a good news for us all chinese users, it seems that yahoo get better than google, in china.(only personal view point)

Hi,
Now that google search is gone

, I would like to know if it will be included in the extra search engines? I have the french version of opera mini, and as extra search engines I have "Google Images", "Google News", "I'm feeling lucky", but I don't have the classical Google Search...
Thank you very much
Thursday, 11. January 2007, 19:26:13
I think this is a definite step backwards for OM. I have tried to find sites with Yahoo in the past, and had poor results. And I agree with other posters' comments about Yahoo's cluttered and clumsy search page. I will stay with Google, and would like to see 2 versions of OM offered, incorporating the alternative search engines. That way I'm not stuck with one I don't want.
Thursday, 11. January 2007, 20:39:57
Hmm... from the Press release (quotes) :
* Opera has named Yahoo! as the exclusive provider of mobile search
* Yahoo! oneSearch™ is a completely new mobile search service designed to give consumers what they want when they are on their mobile phone — instant answers

Hi all, This is my first post!
It was the change from Google to Yahoo that has prompted me to write this post.
The first 3 times that I searched with Yahoo after downloading V.3 of OM I got Zero results as opposed to Google where there we're 000's.
I'm not totally against Yahoo, I suppose it is very good at certain aspects of search. I am not absolutly loyal to Google either, I choose to use Altavista to search for music samples and pictures.
Google is just a very good all rounder.
Maybe it would be best to give people the choice thru preferences of which search engine to use.
Even with the Yahoo search OM is still the best mobile web browser.
Friday, 12. January 2007, 12:22:49
I'm so happy for this partnership.
I don't like google... Not for how it works but for other reason...
Friday, 12. January 2007, 12:29:02
I do still prefer Google to Yahoo... unfortunately, I hadn't heard that Mini 3.x had been released before this happened...

Hummm, I am not a fan of Yahoo! Never have been never will be. Google has its "faults" but they are the leader in internet searching and they do get the job done. I've tried Yahoo! many times, I've simply NEVER found what I was looking for, but if Opera wants to use them its Operas choice. I'll simply keep Google and ignore Yahoo!

Enough said, Yahoo NEVER finds what I want..................prove it different then I will be humble enough to say sorry & use Yahoo.............over to you......Yahoo.......put up or .......well

This change is the worst!Y!search doesn't work in Japaneese characters.We can't find anything.Terrible nightmare…

" I am feeling unlucky ".
... or rather unhappy with Yahoo search on the front page.
But, hey folks:
First thing, OM is distributed for free, and Opera needs to find ways to earn money out of it. Apparently, Yahoo pays them more than Google, so we shouldn't blame them to advertise for Yahoo (and stop ask them to put Google back on the front page. This doesn't work in an exclusive agreement !). What's the deal with bookmarking Google and press *1 to access it? Don't tell me this takes too long!
Second, as explained in
Johan Sch's blog, the current Yahoo search will soon be replaced by something called oneSearch. Maybe this works better, who knows? If not, see above!
Take it easy and enjoy OM!

how did you guys get yahoo to appear as the default search engine for those of us that didn't download the new build?

I prefer google over yahoo. As one poster above suggested, can't we at least get google as an optional search engine?

Since I was never asked to download a new version, how is the Opera Mini browser now made with Yahoo in it? That would require downloading data that I did not agree to.
And Yahoo! is much worse than Google. I'd rather pay a few bucks for the browser rather than have to take the extra step of going to another page. Not everyone has a connection speed and phone that are blazingly fast. My SE w300i is very slow to render pages already. Now I have to go to Google just to start when I need to search.
Could Opera have asked users first? I feel like I was just robbed by this thing downloading an update.
Saturday, 13. January 2007, 07:13:38
hope those 'talented' opera geeks put on their glasses and read the comments in this blog about user search engine preferences. i hate to stop using opera, but i hate yahoo even more. so, my choice is very clear to me - use my phone's browser and wait for google to come out with a mobile browser that will flush opera down the toilet. somehow, i dont think i will have to wait too long given google's innovation vs. yahoo's. opera, this is the dumbest move you could have made; it will soon put you from the best to the mediocre at best. how sad for all of us

You know what? Y'all been using Opera Mini, the best java browser out there, got the internet in your pocket and been using tons of Opera bandwidth all for free. Opera cuts a deal to make a few bucks to buy more servers and eat once in a while and you complain. If you don't like the new Opera Mini default search are you too lazy or don't know how to create another search bookmark on your Start page? Get over it!
Saturday, 13. January 2007, 09:29:44
What Direwolf said!
I don't understand the difficulty. Just bookmark google - that should be a no brainer. *sigh* Yuh just cain't fix stupid, AH guess!
Saturday, 13. January 2007, 10:11:22
Is that guy serious that he was gonna 'boycott' Opera and go back to using his crappy wap browser instead of the 'pain' of having to look at Yahoo on his start page?... what a joke... dude get over yourself... you think Opera cares if you use OM or not?... of course not... we're just lowly end-users man... I personally don't even use search engines that much and I could care less if they made ASK JEEVES the default search engine
Saturday, 13. January 2007, 10:12:45
I've been using a bookmark to Yahoo! Search ever since Mini came out, without complaint. So, this move is a relief for me. I'm GLAD that Yahoo! is the default search by Opera's choice. I believe this is the RIGHT THING TO DO, regardless of the nay-sayers.
This isn't just because I prefer Yahoo! over Google. Myself, I realise that Yahoo!'s search results don't bring as useful results up to that of Google - but I've found that's only when you search for longer or more obscure strings of words. I have never really had that much trouble finding the results I've wanted with Yahoo!
The reason I like it because Yahoo! aren't all as bad as everyone likes to make out. I think they get a raw deal most of the time, off web users, and I think the company's ethics are better than that of Google's; contrary to popular belief.
Saturday, 13. January 2007, 10:15:19
btw, google's not coming out with a mobile browser...

While it's not going to make me boycott opera mini, I believe there is no need for diplomacy and/or supporting the actions taken here. It has evidently been too much to expect a few companies to take a hint from the public backlash at Sony's recent mistakes and not perform what boils down to unsolicited software installation.
Yes people can go on all day about there being no free lunch, but it is still an unauthorised change in existing installs.

Yahoo onesearch will be released shortly (later this month I think), it should improve the overall mobile search experience, and hopefully relevancy as well.

What a load of manure this so-called partnership is. A lot of us rely on Google for its accurate, fast, and plentiful search results. Yahoo is useless for anything other than email.
I have Opera installed on my Blackberry because it's a wonderful browser for my handheld - until today. After I post this reply to your forum, I will promptly uninstall it in prostest of this utterly BONEHEADED move. You people are morons for going down this road partnering with Yahoo. If there ever comes a day when you decide to put Google back on the Opera-Mini start page, I shall be first in line to reinstall it to my BB. Until then, **** ***!

Until then, **** ***!
Bhuh-bye! ...to you too.
Saturday, 13. January 2007, 19:01:31
It is easy to see why the good people of Opera chose to make a deal with Yahoo if it helps pay the bills and make a living.
i'm not going to stop using Opera at all. It's just a small damper on the enthusiasm that I have for Opera, now that I have to see "yahoo" everytime I log in.
Like others, I like to set up my browser and mini-browser to be very efficient and to only have links that I use. Now I have a big link right in the middle of my mini-browser that I will NEVER use.
not sexy.

This is the obvious truth here about this matter and despite all our protestations regarding a preference for Google's service, bottom line realities will always prevail in such situations.
And a side note to Direwolf:
Glad you got the history clearing issue figured out!
My apologies for not posting back in that thread as I don't read this forum as often as I should.
