Change Speed Dial Page Titles
I'd like to change the titles of the pages in Speed Dial, as some websites have long page titles when you really only need one word to describe it. This would be editable in the speeddial.ini file, but when Opera reloads the thumbnails in speed dial, it resets those preferences.Sunday, 15. April 2007, 08:27:32
I'd be happy if Opera retains bookmark names that are dragged on to speed dial.

I cannot promise anything for the next version, but I'll keep it in mind.

Being able to deal with corner cases while still being able to handle fixed titles would increase complexity (and the chance of introducing bugs), so we decided not to do it for 9.2.
I understand the problem with redirecting pages, but wouldn't it be possible to add the option to change the title when a website is added to the Speed Dial (something like the nickname for bookmarks) and store it somewhere in a .ini file, and when you show the Speed Dial, first you check the .ini file and display that title if there is one, otherwise you follow the current procedure?
Overly long titles are certainly not a serious problem, especially since you cut them off anyway, but it would be nice to have the ability to change them manually. Some web page titles are just useless -- like "CNN.com - Breaking News, U.S., World, Weather, Entertainment & Video News" or "Lonely Planet: the world's best guidebooks, travel advice and information" -- and do nothing but add clutter to the Speed Dial.

It would be nice to have more power on how the webpages are displayed. Including an intelligent resizing; i.e. if the page in question only contains a small picture, then Opera should have an option to crop the page prior to generating the thumbnail so we see the most information. This could be useful for stock graphics, weather and small status tables.

I've thought this would be a Good Idea for some time. When I found that speeddial.ini could be edited to change the number of entries, I also saw that the titles were in the file and could be edited. Alas, that does precisely nothing. They do not seem to get replaced by the page titles (unless the speeddial entry is itself changed or the speeddial page reloaded?). So why are they even there?
This would not need to be a default behavior -- I'd just like to be able to switch the ability on and use it.

And so it can. I spend as much time as anyone customising Opera to my liking, and I have a customised local home page too, but the purpose of Speed Dial is go quickly to your favourite pages. If you want greater design freedom, then create a local or online home page. The thumbnail titles are irrelevant if your'e using Speed Dial for its intended purpose. If you're just sitting there looking at it, wondering how it could look better, then you've missed the point of it.

Exactly. But some pages have excessively long titles that needlessly clutter up the display. I would much prefer to have "CNN" on my speed dial rather than "CNN.com International - Breaking, World, Business, Sports, Entertainment and Video News."the purpose of Speed Dial is go quickly to your favourite pages.
Another problem is that overly long titles are truncated. That's harmless on most sites, but if I want to have two pages from the same website on my speed dial and that website uses page titles consisting of a constant part at the beginning and a variable part towards the end, then the variable part may get cut off completely and both pages appear with the same title on the speed dial, making it impossible to distinguish between them.
For instance, say I want the weather forecasts for Guatemala City and Antigua Guatemala on the speed dial, and I want to use AccuWeather. What do I see on the speed dial? "AccuWeather.com - Guatemal..." and "AccuWeather.com - Antigua ...". If the constant part of the title ("AccuWeather.com - " in this case) were just 8 characters longer, I couldn't distinguish between the two pages anymore.
Then there are also pages without a title or with a useless title like "Welcome" or "Home page." In those cases it would also be useful to change the title. So, the ability to edit the titles is not a useless gimmick. Quite the opposite, it would make the speed dial easier and more efficient to use.
