RAM usage

Opera is a great browser, but it uses way too much RAM. After viewing several webpages its resource usage is like 40 MB of ram. Does this happen to anyone else? Also, opera sometime uses more RAM to view the same webpage as IE. I use the most standard skin for opera, and i've limited memory and page cache to 10 MB. Anyone else see this problem? Thanks for any help.

Try Minimizing Opera, then Restoring it, ram will be freed to an "acceptable" level.

Turn off automatic memory cache.

minimizing the opera window does set it back to 10 MB, but when maximized again, it slowsly swells back up to its bloated RAM usage. Is there a more permanent fix for this problem?

No. Opera keep saying "why is this a problem?"

It's not a problem because Opera's behaving as designed. If you have available physical memory and it's not being used, Opera grabs it and puts it to use. I have automatic RAM caching on, and I've seen Opera reduces its footprint once other programs make a RAM grab.

For example, on this machine with 256 MB of RAM, after some browsing Opera is "hogging" 35 MB of RAM. There's still 129 MB available though, so it's not a real big issue. As I open up copies of Internet Explorer, each instance with my homepage grabs 23MB of RAM. After opening up 6 copies, I've run out of physical memory and start hitting the swap file. At this point, Opera automatically reduced it's footprint to under 30MB. I opening up a couple more copies of IE, and Opera reduces it a little more to 19MB.

I fail to see a problem with that behaviour.

How do you like them apples? 175M!

I've labeled this thread as a memory leak.. My whole system crawled after that.. when I minimized opera... it took way too long to open any other windows. I have 256M ram.
