New Opera Mini beta coming soon

Hi all!

I suspect you've heard the good news? A new beta is on its way! You can also read about it in the press release.

So, what we want now, is that as many as possible sign up as beta testers to help us with the finishing touches of this new version of Opera Mini! The only thing you'll have to do, is give us your name and email address, and when you've tested the beta version, we would like some feedback from you.

Have you thought about what the code name "Dimension" stands for?

Of course, we won't tell anything until the beta is ready. All I can say is that we're really looking forward to showing you this wonderful new piece of software!

I hope you're all as excited as we are! :hat:

Dimension means:
  1. Landscape view
  2. Horizontal scroll bar
  3. Both

No, no, it means that they KNOW what's in it, but they're not allowed "dimension" it!

Maybe spatial navigation? Would make sense, as most people don't plug a mouse in their phone...

I would rather like a lynx-like navigation, but I don't think it would make browsing faster.

Dimension possibilities :

1) Er...new visual effects
2) nope, I'm stumped :frown:

My general predictions :

1) Improved zoom function, allowing user to zoom on a point rather than the ol' Top-left, Centre, and so on.
2) Rewritten bookmark, feeds and history screens
3) Better handling of sites that uses Javascript hyperlinks.

and also I hope :

1) Blank screen bug eradicated
2) Facility to upload/download feeds and bookmarks to and from an Opera Community account
3) Viewed feeds restored to History.
4) Additional 'reload' option for people who don't load pictures - 'reload with pictures'
5) Ability to view what a link is before following it

I hope they don't attempt horizontal scrolling, given that left and right are used for rapid up/down navigation. It annoys me on the built-in browsers and on computers when horizontal scrolling is requiredd.

Well, SSR landscape view has been wished by many...
Easy to add that option, as screen size 240 x 320 also can be read 320 x 240, if instructed to ?

But *Dimension* is more than that... beats me

Ok I'm betting tabbed browsing and/or heuristic navigation instead of menu tunneling.

does it take a while to get the email? i am excited to try it

I think tabbed browsing would be ill-suited to a mobile phone without a touch-screen, and would likely consume too much of the limited memory available to Mini in many phones.

good point well then what else could it be???

Sunday, 13. May 2007, 02:23:42

I have no idea. I am however sure that when we find out we will either go "Doh! Why didn't i think of that? Genius!" or "Is that it?"

Sunday, 13. May 2007, 04:23:57

I just want saved page feature and landscape view,it will be fantastic to me!

I hope that there is an email client in the new version. And that the problem of constant crashing is fixed. Its now turning into a usual routine and its really irritating. Oh and also wouldn't it cool be if opera mini had a warning tone or a reminder tone that alerts you when your about to be out of memory. And also when you have got new mail in your email client inbox cool hah.

I want to be able to view a pages source code since im learning how to make web pages. woop woop my first mobile post.

Sunday, 13. May 2007, 17:35:50

"dimension" may mean that 3D effects are to be added, perhaps for pressing buttons.

Sunday, 13. May 2007, 17:48:24

isn't the 4th dimension called "Time"? maybe the haphazard opera mini clock will get sorted out.

Maybe it will be "RMS dimention"? With option to save pages for offline browsing?
As I know it's possible to implement: just storing the recieved OML page to the RMS memory, and later read it (without any HTML convertion that I've read somewhere at the forum) .
P.S.
To opera team: please feed your "server monkeys", they are not allowing me to post. (I'm writing it 3rd time)

maybe dimension means browsing entire world web like special fonts other than just alphabetical fonts are supported so we can browse 'other world' than only 'alphabetical world'?

You can't since Opera Mini doesn't handle the page rendering itself. It's done by a server.
